Lots of endless detail that seemed to lead nowhere, I found it hard to finish or follow

Good Adventure, fairly technical--climbers only

Although obviously Steve House is a great climber and completed some very impressive and dangerous ascents, his recounting is such that it is probably better enjoyed by alpinists themselves as the descriptions are mostly technical, describing each pitch, equipment used and difficulty of route. There isn't much for the lay person who is picking this up for adventure reading. I got the gist of the various trips, but it would have been much better if he had interspersed technical descriptions with language anyone could understand about what was happening, because you can't really grasp it unless you're a climber yourself. That said, I read it and was kind of able to envision what was going on, it was just a little dry. I couldn't really fully experience what he ws talking about.

If you enjoy reading about every detail of a mountaineers acclimatization, his bodily functions, kidneys, food intake, elimination, etc. then this book is for you. I found it ponderous, the narration dramatized every sentence to the point that mundane things took on an air of the utmost importance. Hearing over and over about his obsession with his fluid intake and elimination was frankly boring and offensive as he describes his constant worry about his adjustment to higher altitude. The egocentricity was tedious and extremely off-putting. During the last third of the book when he finally starts climbing it's a little better, just OK, but not a book I would recommend to anyone who enjoys mountaineering stories. I don't see how this book garnered such good reviews. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay for it.

There are parts of this book I do love but it's so long and parts of it just drag on as it comes together. I loved the detailed descriptions of the country and the people but it was also a little boring.

I had high hopes for a recounting in detail of the infamous Thai cave rescue and nothing but admiration for the cave divers that pulled it off. A tremendous feat of prowess and bravery but this book doesn't really elaborate on the actual rescue. So Rick and his partner were very deliberate about shunning all publicity or taking credit for their actions. That was why when I saw the book I was surprised but I guess that in order for John to justify writing it he had to drape it in the guise of a self-help book that way he could avoid any self agrandizement, even though he does tout his experience and knowledge a good deal. He doesn't really go into much deatil about the rescue, a little but not what you'd expect or hope for. I'm going to read the Aquanaut by Rick Stanton and hope that is more satisfying. This book was just boring to me.

I love the Doors and am interested in their story. I liked Robby Kreiger's anecdotes and history of the band, insights into himself, etc. but I had a hard time following the book. It jumps around into different time frames so that I was not able to follow what was going on when. I don't know why they chose to write it in this manner, but rather than adding interest, it was confusing. I admired Robby's person, he is obviously a gifted muscian, and also generous, compassionate and has an elevated consciousness I found refreshing.

Second half is better than the first

I'm a great lover of the Sierras, hence my interest in this book. Parts of it were reminiscent of my own experiences, but much of it was autobiographical in nature which did not interest me, nor did the history which I've read before in other sources. He philosophizes quite a bit, gets into esoteric realms and so there was maybe 1/3 of the book which I found rewarding and the other parts I skipped over. The second half is definitely better than the first part, more about the mountains and trails and his exploits. However, if you haven't been there and don't have maps, you'll find it hard to follow.

A great combination of stories that include detailed descriptions of food preparation by accomplished chefs, insight into their lives and restaurants. I enjoyed it very much.

Just loved this book and the only negative thing was having it end. I wanted the experience to go on and on, so I just listened to it all over again. Ray Porter the narrator is simply fabulous, this is a performance in every sense of the word. No violence, no negativity, lots of science and astronomy, I was riveted. Don't miss this adventure!
