Historia
The cabin had always been a special retreat for Isherwood Williams, a haven from the demands of society. But one day while hiking, Ish was bitten by a rattlesnake, and the solitude he had so desired took on dire new significance. Ish headed home when he finally felt himself again—and noticed the strangeness almost immediately. No cars passed him on the road; the gas station not far from his cabin looked abandoned; and he was shocked to see the body of a man on the roadside near a small town. Without a radio or phone, Ish had no idea of humanity’s abrupt demise.

Underwhelming and naive
Revisado: 03-12-24
The story is incredibly naive and simplistic. Plot is for middle schoolers. The language is for college grads. Yes, it is an old book and among the first but still.. underwhelming.

Not bad. Not great either.
Revisado: 01-19-24
Good story that could be great. Unfortunately the story alludes to much to the USA popular culture of early 2020s. This kills the mood.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Captivating and at times frustrating
Revisado: 08-19-23
The author has talent and self discipline to create a massively captivating and satisfying story.
Bravo.
However the persistent homage to 'modern culture' is annoying: depicting women as essentially a man in a skirt.
Main female characters mostly 'mary sue' through the plot lines. You guessed it - almost two thirds are generals, high rank politicians and otherwise extraordinary individuals who just excel in everything they do. Because reasons.
Half of all soldiers are female - share the barracks, hardships of service duty and fighting and dying in the battlefield.
Just, no one ever gets pregnant.
High stress environment where you just don't know if you be alive the next day and no contraceptives in the fantasy early 19th century. The story gets quite ludicrous completely ignoring the biological and social realities of humans. The whole new level of 'fantasy'.
Price of admission these days?

Historia
The young nation of Fatrasta is a turbulent place - a frontier destination for criminals, fortune hunters, brave settlers, and sorcerers seeking relics of the past. Only the iron will of the lady chancellor and her secret police holds the capital city of Landfall together against the unrest of an oppressed population and the machinations of powerful empires.

Even better than the 1st trilogy.
Revisado: 08-17-23
The author clearly has talent.
And the 2nd trilogy quality shows no signs of a burnout.
This trilogy is MUCH more satisfying read than the 1st (Powder Mage)
Better storytelling, more intriguing plot, fantastic narration.
The only downside I can think of is not necessarily the authors fault and more of a price of admission.
The ubiquitous mandatory 'equity'. The biological nuances of the sexes are ignored. All women are as physically tough as men etc, the 'strong female character' narrative is bearable however, and does not ruin the mood of the otherwise great story.

Historia
For years, Glen Cook's Black Company series has built a major audience among fantasy fans. Told from the "worm's-eye" view of the soldiers and functionaries who fight in the trenches of vast sorceress wars, this epic has riveted a generation of readers. If the Joseph Heller of Catch-22 were to tell the story of The Lord of the Rings, it might read like the Black Company books.

good story, awful narration
Revisado: 05-31-23
The store is good. no complaints. The narration not so much. it felt like they let some intern or the talent of imitating voices to do the whole feature. The narration is absolutely soulless. awkward pauses everywhere. I couldn't bear the generation so much that started listening the book from chapter 70 with lots of skipping and increasing speed to 130%. I really don't understand how this could possibly be released in this state.

Still great
Revisado: 04-02-23
Say one thing about Joe Abercrombie, say his caving to 'modern audiences' in recent books is rather unfortunate.
Still a great story teller, but too often than not I was getting that feeling that he had a quota of 'inclusivity' to fill for the publisher.
All checkboxes. Still great story though, don't get me wrong.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

A modern classic feels like two separate books
Revisado: 12-28-22
Part 1. The end of the world.
We can all totally relate to this after 2020.
Well written, very engaging.
Excellent character development,
Part 2. King runs out of ideas and steam.
Once the protagonists meet in Nebraska the story goes down the drain.
Is it about Good vs Evil? Maybe. But has little to do with Part 1.
Boring, tedious, artificial, feels like it will never end.
And once in awhile the author inserts his political view preferences that we definitely could live without.

Historia
In 1349, one small town in Germany disappeared and was never resettled. Tom, a contemporary historian, and his theoretical-physicist girlfriend, Sharon, become interested. By all logic, the town should have survived, but it didn't. Why? What was special about Eifelheim that it utterly disappeared more than 600 years ago?

Refreshing ideas but tedious execution
Revisado: 12-28-22
I really struggled to finish listening to this book.
Sometimes it almost felt like the author was paid per page of written text - the plot struggles to keep pace.
Too many dead end plot twists that that go nowhere.
Too much of a self aggrandizing language - medieval folk speak like modern PhDs and are VERY open minded.
Interesting idea that just not so interestingly executed.
