Good story, but…
Revisado: 07-11-24
…the narrator was awful! The characters came off as whiny and annoying. The accents were cringe worthy. If the story was any less good, I would have DNFed it strictly because of the poor narration. But, is it is, the story was great, IMO. And I had to know what happened next, until I finally made it to the end of the book.

This book was fun and funny. I love dark humor. I found myself cracking up at all the antics of the women in this story. It’s no piece of literary wonderment, but I enjoyed it all the same.

One of my new favorites
Revisado: 02-13-24
This book had a choke hold on me. I admit it started off a little slow. But once it grabbed me, I couldn’t stop. I’m so grateful to have been immersed in a culture that I have so little knowledge of and experience with. The story was strong, there were twists and turns that I didn’t expect, and it brought all sorts of emotions to the surface. I wept…a few times. This will definitely be one of those books that I reread, and I don’t have many of those.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

LOVE THIS SERIES! Love the narrator!!!
Revisado: 11-26-23
This series has a choke hold on me! I just finished this book, and now I don’t want to read anything else because I don’t think anything will be as good! I love the performance as well - she’s emotional and gritty - the tone matching the emotion and internal chaos that I feel while listening. The narrator is PERFECT. I hope she does the rest of the audiobooks too! I can hardly wait for the third book.

Good story but…
Revisado: 10-14-23
While I enjoyed the story, the characters - all of them - are not likable. I struggled to get through this because I hated everybody in this book so much. I’m glad I got through it, but I couldn’t care less what happens after the first book because the characters are so detestable.

Great story
Revisado: 10-14-23
I don’t want to write a review for each episode. So, this is for the entire series. I thought it was a great story. I listened to all the episodes on a road trip with my family. We all enjoyed it and we are looking forward to more!

It’s 1936, in Flint Michigan. Times may be hard, and ten-year-old Bud may be a motherless boy on the run, but Bud’s got a few things going for him. 1. He has his own suitcase full of special things. 2. He’s the author of Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself. 3. His momma never told him who his father was, but she left a clue: flyers advertising Herman E. Calloway and his famous band, the Dusky Devastators of the Depression!!!!!! Bud’s got an idea that those flyers will lead him to his father.

Wow…just WOW.
Revisado: 05-14-23
I read this book as a recommendation from my son. My son, who loathes reading, had to read this book in middle school - he’s now in high school. Almost everyday after school, he’d come home and tell me about what was happening in this book. This year, one of my reading challenge prompts was to read a book that won the Newberry Medal, and my son told me to choose this book. I’ll read any book that he suggests because he likes so few of them. I was NOT disappointed. This story filled me with so many emotions and James Avery was the perfect narrator. I can’t wait to recommend this book to other readers. What a great story.

One of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished American in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor.

Great story but…
Revisado: 04-10-23
This story is amazing - and it’s a good thing. Because if the story were half as bad as the narration, I would’ve had to put it in my DNF pile. The narration was flat and glib. I understand that the story was set during a time of struggle & strife but the was NO emotion in this performance. If the author narrates all of his own audiobooks, I’ll not listen to another. I’d rather read it myself.

Rounded Up from 3.75
Revisado: 01-16-23
I’d actually give this book a 3.75. I was going to give up about 25% through. But I decided to soldier on. I’m really glad I did continued. It turned out to be a really cute story, albeit a bit predictable in some parts. But, by the end I had thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ll definitely look into other works by this author.
The narrator was absolutely perfect. I could listen to her all day.
