Historia
In 1900, the U.S. sent three doctors to Cuba to discover how yellow fever was spread. There, they launched one of history's most controversial human studies. Compelling and terrifying, The American Plague depicts the story of yellow fever and its reign in this country - and in Africa, where even today it strikes thousands every year. With "arresting tales of heroism," it is a story as much about the nature of human beings as it is about the nature of disease.

Engaging Historical Non-Fiction
Revisado: 08-15-23
I really enjoyed this audiobook and the author's writing. Like most audiobooks, once I was used to the narration, it was great. I am familiar with the city of Memphis. Learning how impactful yellow fever was to its development has brought the present day into a new perspective. The court square fountain had champagne in it! I'm nostalgic for a time and place that I didn't know.

Who Is The Audience?

Calling the jokes 'corny' alienates a bunch of bad jokes that are better than the ones they tried to slip in here. If you can make it through the inauthentic persona and attempts at humor there is good information underneath.

Historia
We are living through the most prosperous age in all of human history, yet we are listless, divided, and miserable. Wealth and comfort are unparalleled, but our political landscape is unmoored, and rates of suicide, loneliness, and chronic illness continue to skyrocket. How do we explain the gap between these truths? And how should we respond? For evolutionary biologists Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein, the cause of our troubles is clear: The accelerating rate of change in the modern world has outstripped the capacity of our brains and bodies to adapt.

Complex Worldview Made Accessible
Revisado: 10-10-21
I have no specific examples but felt like some of the chapters were build up to something the reader could take away as their position on current divisive social media narratives. It was kind of a let down to flirt with this book being an invitation to co-op a narrative; exactly what the book would seem to be warning against. Its also possible that I didnt grasp the nuance of everything and had bias going in. Overall, great thoughts and ideas to meditate on as we observe our reality and act in the world.

Valuable Subject Matter; Coarse Delivery
Revisado: 08-07-21
I found it difficult to follow the many voices reciting the conversation and felt a lot of tension as Paul's dialogue seemed abrasive at times. This would be good for someone who is coming into Buddhism through Paul but might be frustrating for someone with more than a pedestrian experience of Buddhism. Quality message regardless of the listening experience.

We let Evangeline's story introduce us to New Orleans and the Bayou while we drove there for a family trip. Everyone was captivated and looked forward to getting back in the car. It inspired confidence in our intuition and gave us common ground as we explored New Orleans.

Historia
This classic course was recorded in the mid 1980's as we neared the end of the second Christian Millennium; many prophetic voices were being raised to speak of revelation and other apocalyptic visions. Some western mystics even mentioned the future Buddha, Maitreya, in connection with a returning Christ or Christ impulse. What do the Buddhists, themselves, say about the end of the world as we know it? What is Buddhist apocalyptic? This workshop examines these questions with full rigor.

Missing Parts of the Lecture
Revisado: 07-09-20
There are a few stories that are noticeably cut off too soon. Most frustratingly, the last story. I'm sure that equates to a lesson of it's own but I was disappointed not to hear this particular lesson completely from Robert. 5 stars for the lectures, 2 stars for the editing of the audio.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Eye Opening and Watering
Revisado: 06-26-20
The narration was engaging. I can't believe this hasn't been adapted into a multi season tv series. I came here to get an understanding of something I now feel may have been intentionally left out of the story I've been told about our shared history. Tears of sorrow and joy for my fellow Americans while following these inspiring story lines. Thank you to everyone involved for making this accessible to me.
