Monotonous story, not worth the time
Revisado: 11-09-21
The fantastic cast isn't enough to make this listen worth your time. The plot, seemingly meant to constantly deliver twists, becomes monotonous. The end is good, and this book could have been too, had at least an hour of the repetitive "twists" been deleted.

Nothing like the Department Q novels
Revisado: 08-05-21
If you’re thinking of downloading this book because you loved the Dept. Q series, you may want to reconsider. This book is completely different; nothing like the fast-paced, complex situations in which Detective Carl Mørck and company find themselves. I binged that series one after another, buying extra credits like they were going out of style, but had to force myself to finish this book. Such a slow start and unsatisfying end. It’s hard to believe this was written by the same author.

Historia
The newspaper refers to the body only as Victim 2117 - the 2117th refugee to die in the Mediterranean Sea. But to three people, the unnamed victim is so much more, and the death sets off a chain of events that throws Department Q, Copenhagen’s cold cases division led by Detective Carl Mørck, into a deeply dangerous - and deeply personal - case. A case that not only reveals dark secrets about the past, but has deadly implications for the future.

Repetitive; same plot and similar conflicts to other Kruger books
Revisado: 03-22-21
I listened to all 6 Kruger books back-to-back, and while doing so picked up on so many similarities between books. Pseudo-spoiler alert: Kruger debates retiring (multiple times), his family comes under attack (again), and there is another white-knuckle terrorist with an automobile chase situation. Sound familiar? I enjoyed the first books in the series but really had to force myself to finish this one. It was just more of the same.

Amazing story and narration
Revisado: 09-23-20
As usual, JK Rowling delivers the vibrant characters and complex plot that kept me glued to the story. I plowed through the book so quickly, and now I’m sad it’s over. Trying to figure out the meaning of the last line is driving me crazy, though!

Should have been hours shorter
Revisado: 10-22-19
I appreciate the author’s passion for elephants, but the repeated sad descriptions of their death and the herd’s mourning was a real downer. This was less murder mystery than disturbing stories of elephant abuse or natural death. Over and over. Seriously, at least 2 hours of the elephant commentary could have been removed from the book, making it less depressing, and wouldn’t have made a impact on the plot at all. I was glad to finish this one.

Historia
A woman disappears on her way to work. A man is convicted of her murder. But this case is different. Though the police believe they have the right man, key components of the prosecution case are missing. There is no body of the victim, no witnesses to the crime, no confession and no physical evidence: no DNA, CCTV or murder weapon.

Huge theory holes; made him look more guilty
Revisado: 10-11-19
The logic of the investigators/narrators shows numerous weaknesses; theory holes large enough through which you could drive a truck. For example, they base a large part of the podcast to where the body might be buried. They assume she was buried, and speculate how unlikely it was that the convicted could have done so without getting dirty, sweaty, etc. No speculation was made that she could have been dropped in a creek, a deep culvert, a sink hole, whatever. They present their conclusions as THE fact, without seeming to peruse all avenues. That being said, they did seem to do a lot of research, but appear to have skipped a few steps in interpreting their data. Audio quality is uneven throughout, and the convicted’s account is entirely over the phone, which is quite muffled.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

This is a fabulous story with enjoyable characters, high suspense, and even some warm fuzzies, delivered by an amazing narrator. This is King’s best book in a while, IMO.

Great book, but the narrator...
Revisado: 08-23-19
The pace of this book is a little slower/less nail biting than the Pendergast novels, but the backstory is great! The author was ok until the end when Pendergast enters the scene. She gave Pendergast a British-ish accent! She obviously did no prior research on the series from which this book originated. How did no one notice this??
