Historia
The year is 2322. Humanity has expanded into the stars, inhabiting over 100 worlds across a third of the galaxy. Though thriving as never before, they have discovered neither alien life nor the key to utopia. Earth struggles to retain authority over far-flung planets and free-wheeling corporations, while an uneasy armistice with a breakaway federation hangs by a thread as the former rebels rise in wealth and power.

Epic in scale
Revisado: 03-29-25
I had started this months ago and abandoned it because of my inability to follow the complexity and enormous cast of characters. I gave it another go and finally got a handle on it and was able to follow it. Characters were rich, but believable and natural. The plot of epic scale. The tension high, but good pacing provided occasional relief. Her writing style was beautiful, elegant, and mature. I’m debating upgrading the second book to a reading book to a reading experience, but I’ll likely continue listening due to my greediness to see how unfolds.

Too complicated
Revisado: 07-07-23
Too complicated, way too much info in the info dumps, but the fact the I not only finished it (I abandon half the stuff I start) but downloaded the next one should be taken as high praise. I really liked the overall trajectory of the story and mostly liked the characters and pacing. He just needs to stop trying to convince his readers of the plausibility of the scientific merit of his world building efforts through sheer inundation of detail.

Historia
Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

Mostly good with some exceptions
Revisado: 08-21-22
Martin’s world building skills are without peer, His prose elegant and poetic, His descriptions vivid, but to me his pace is frequently plodding with too many bits the seem to nothing to advance the story.
The presenter has a great voice and his characterizations are interesting, appropriate, and distinct with one glaring and notable exception; his Daenerys sounds like a feeble minded leprechaun.

Wow
Revisado: 07-15-22
Pros: very natural dialogue with a smooth, easily flowing writing style.
Well constructed mystery of the aliens itntent - a couple of clues here pointing to them being good guys, a couple of clues pointing to a more nefarious intent there. - still not entirely sure at the end.
Great vivid characters
Great pacing- like a snowball rolling down hill.
Cons: had a terrible time putting the thing down - kept me from getting enough sleep.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Conflicted review
Revisado: 03-29-22
Pros
Many aspects of the writing were brilliant and beautiful.
World was well thought out, interesting, and intricate
Characters were well thought out, distinct and vivid.
Performer was brilliant- gotta remember to search for more stuff by him
Cons
Just didn’t really like the story
I like a happy (happier) ending and didn’t get one.
Overall I didn’t really care for it but could definitely see some people absolutely loving it.

Historia
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Where’s the plot?
Revisado: 03-21-22
Interesting and exotic situations and locations, but some semblance of an overall plot would really be nice.

Tedious
Revisado: 02-02-22
Narrator was competent, story plot was slow and simplistic, but the English was awful. Her scanty use of contractions made both the narration and dialogue seem unnatural. But for some reason, she had no problem using uncommon or archaic contractions like ‘daren’t’ (which she used twice before I couldn’t take any more and gave up)
