Good story until the last third
Revisado: 04-26-25
Over-reached a little in the last part and the ending was fairly obvious. Other than that, a solid entry in the Standing series.

Great compilation of early Spider Shepherd stories
Revisado: 03-02-25
Definitely Stephen Leather, but with a hint of Andy McNab and Chris Ryan (nothing wrong there). Some nice Easter eggs and back story to the man he would become and how he got there. Only criticism is the short stories included should be listed in the description. They are: Natural Selection, Narrow Escape, Warning Order, Hostile Territory, Rough Diamonds, Personal Protection, Friendly Fire, Dead Drop, Kill Zone.

Man what a GREAT story….BUT……
- De ShawniqueLovesToRead en 03-15-24
Good performances and production, weak story
Revisado: 11-14-24
Tries too hard with the early and late twists. Not enough time was spent building one of the key characters to make them a real anti-hero. The final twist was too awkwardly done and way too many bad decisions were made by supposedly intelligent people.

I’ve read a lot of Philip Kerr and this was almost as enjoyable as the early Bernie Gunther novels. Will definitely be doing the full set.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Not as strong as Hail Mary or the Martian,
Revisado: 07-19-24
Actors don’t always make good audiobook readers. Some of the accents were incredibly poor and distracting, but overall a serviceable performance.
The story was much more of a traditional heist with a bit of science thrown in. Philip Kerr’s The Second Angel covers similar ground a little better (if you can find it).
Nowhere near as engaging as The Martian or Hail Mary and quite a short listen.

Historia
Attorney Nate Shepherd’s newest client stands accused of a fatal hit and run. While Nate doesn’t believe that the CEO of Carrefour’s largest charity would ever smash into a person and flee the scene, a blood-streaked van says otherwise. A freewheeling prosecutor is certain that Nate’s client did it, and more, that the killing wasn’t an accident at all. With help from old friends and an intriguing new one, Nate uncovers incriminating acts, secret relationships, and a massive motive that has him scrambling for answers.

An uptick for the Nate Shepherd series
Revisado: 02-20-24
A similar “rapid wrap up” to the last one that might have been more interesting had it leaned in 2-3 chapter earlier. That being said, it did what it needed to do. A couple of the long-term characters had minor developments but would have been nice to see some of them move along a little more.

It’s 1996, and Reacher is still in the army. In the morning they give him a medal, and in the afternoon they send him back to school. That night he’s off the grid. Out of sight, out of mind. Two other men are in the classroom—an FBI agent and a CIA analyst. Each is a first-rate operator, each is fresh off a big win, and each is wondering what the hell they are doing there. Then they find out: A Jihadist sleeper cell in Hamburg, Germany, has received an unexpected visitor—a Saudi courier, seeking safe haven while waiting to rendezvous with persons unknown.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Strong performances, tight writing, pedestrian story,
Revisado: 12-02-22
I like both Ballard and Bosch as characters and have read/listened to the back catalog of both. Story wise, this is a little pedestrian and very linear. There are no surprises or interesting complications, the story just goes from A to B. Had there been a little more character development or the introduction of solid supporting characters that would have been fine, but this is 50% Bosch, 40% Ballard and 10% bystanders.
I can decide if it’s an attempt to set up the Cold Case squad as a TV show or just a filler to justify the continuing partnership.
Anyway, performances were all top notch and the writing was tight, it was just let down by the weak story progression and there were a couple of holes I couldn’t see past (a solid detective would be well aware of the holes in her case when they are that large).

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Solid Connelly Book
Revisado: 07-06-22
I like Ballard as a character and the smaller Bosch role works well to counterpoint and move the story. The semi-twist was fairly obvious 2/3 of the way through, but it doesn’t spoil the ending. Christine Lakin’s narration was spot on (as was Titus in his guest role). I liked the small role of Covid in the book, most media from this period seems to avoid it or make it front row. Here it felt natural. Now we just need a Cassie Black return.

Tonight, Osmond Box, the reclusive yet wildly successful writer/director known for his completely surprising Broadway plays, is debuting his seventh and most highly anticipated production of his career: The Guilty. Nothing is known about the story, the setting, the premise, or even the actors involved. The first people to discover the truth will be the lucky ones sitting in those seats opening night.
