Historia
This week, we talk to Findlay, Ohio Mayor Christina Muryn, who has established herself as a "continuous improvement mayor" through the time, effort, and capital she has dedicated to improving operations. We wanted to get some insight into what has been successful for her city, and why a mid-sized city such as Findlay is a great place to implement and make adjustments to a continuous improvement strategy. In Ripped from the Headlines, we discuss a recently signed Capital Infrastructure Plan in Los Angeles which will overhaul how city departments plan and deliver infrastructure projects as the ...

Revisado: 12-15-24
The two hosts asked good questions. Mayor Christina sounds like a intelligent, down to earth, quality leader.

Historia
To master anything, one must first master themselves–one’s emotions, one’s thoughts, one’s actions. Eisenhower famously said that freedom is really the opportunity to practice self-discipline. Cicero called the virtue of temperance the polish of life. Without boundaries and restraint, we risk not only failing to meet our full potential and jeopardizing what we have achieved, but we ensure misery and shame. In a world of temptation and excess, this ancient idea is more urgent than ever.

From the earliest days of his 34-year military career, Victor "Brute" Krulak displayed a remarkable facility for applying creative ways of fighting to the Marine Corps. He went on daring spy missions, was badly wounded, pioneered the use of amphibious vehicles, and masterminded the invasion of Okinawa. In Korea, he was a combat hero and invented the use of helicopters in warfare.

Historia
Michael Porter’s groundbreaking ideas on competition and strategy have unfolded over three decades and are spread across a dauntingly long list of publications. Every manager can name individual pieces of his work - competitive advantage, the value chain, five forces - but no one, not even Porter himself, has put the entire puzzle together to reveal it as an integrated whole. This lucid, concise audiobook does just that. This book provides an engaging summary of Porter’s ideas and an invaluable synthesis of this important body of work....

Absolutely an incredible book… I will be giving it as a gift to several friends
Revisado: 05-02-20
This was an absolutely incredible book. It was a gift from my friend, given my background in search and rescue. I never would’ve purchased the book on my own, but I am glad that he did it for me. This book was so intellectually interesting. They talked about many of the things that I learned about during a recent executive masters of the leadership program at USC, and while also studying for my doctorate. This book is exceptional. This is not a book about simple, caveman like survival skills. rather the book is about Neuro-science of the brain, zen thinking, and respect-based approach to life. Once you pick it up, you will not be able to put it down. Your life will not be the same after having read this.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Good points with an anti-police bias
Revisado: 02-13-20
Mr. Gladwell made some good points worthy of reflection. Ordinarily, I’m a huge fan of all of his books.
I was disappointed to see Mr. Gladwell defaults to a negative view of the police force.
I have found the biggest critics of the police are the ones that have never worked in a patrol car.
Mr. Gladwell’s anti-gun approach was similarly disappointing.
That said, other parts of the book were great.

Historia
John Boyd may be the most remarkable unsung hero in all of American military history. Some remember him as the greatest US fighter pilot ever - the man who, in simulated air-to-air combat, defeated every challenger in less than 40 seconds. Some recall him as the father of our country's most legendary fighter aircraft - the F-15 and F-16. Still, others think of Boyd as the most influential military theorist since Sun Tzu. They know only half the story.

The author and the person who read the book for flawless. The accomplishments of John Boyd and his acolytes are beyond description.
What am amazing man, and battles he fought... brilliant.

Historia
The retired four-star general and and best-selling author of My Share of the Task shares a powerful new leadership model. Former General Stanley McChrystal held a key position for much of the War on Terror, as head of the Joint Special Operations Command. In Iraq, he found that despite the vastly superior resources, manpower, and training of the US Military, Al Qaeda had an advantage because of its structure as a loose network of small, independent cells. To defeat such an agile enemy, JSOC had to change its focus from efficiency to adaptability.

Exceptional book. I will be purchasing a hard copy.
Revisado: 07-29-18
This was an exceptional book. The book was recommended to me by a local police chief. Everything he said about the book was accurate. This is a book that I will be recommending to fellow doctoral students, as well as students that are working in the executive masters of leadership program at USC.
This book is not an accumulation of hoo-raa military stories. Rather, the book incorporates research and examples from both the public and private sector throughout the last 100 years. These examples are focused on addressing a significant managerial problem the author was faced if he was going to be successful during his time in Iraq (2002-2005). Largely, it deals with the different ways one must respond to complex problems verses historically complicated problems.
While my wife is not big on military stories, I have recommended that she read this book as a relates to her MBA program and as a relates to her professional life in the business world.
