Historia
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

Zombies With a Twist of Lime and One Big Error
Revisado: 05-12-15
I gave this book an overall rating of 3 but may have raised it to 3.5 if that option was available. The character development was really good and the story line created an interesting twist to all the sad ole zombie story lines. Good writing throughout. Overall, the narrator was excellent but she seriously messed up on the pronunciation of the name of one of the lead characters about 96% of the time. If she had done it 100% it might have been easier to listen to. For the vast majority of the book, the narrator (somewhat ironically) mispronounced the last name of the TEACHER/friend/advocate character, Miss Papineau, as "Papin-oo" instead of "Papin-oh". Grrrrr... I found this error so distracting that I had to keep telling myself that this was not a new character coming in out of nowhere... just a different pronunciation of the same name. Very frustrating!

As Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes embark on their 11th adventure together, they find themselves immersed in the world of silent filmmaking. Here, the pirates are real—and unlike the shooting done with a camera, this sort can be deadly.

A Thorn Amongst the Roses
Revisado: 11-08-12
I am gobsmasked!!! I have been blissfully pouring through the books in this series and, after the fabulous development of Book 8 and 9, this book is hurled into the mix. It seems to taint the rest of the series. Yes, that dreadful. The book reads more like a disappointing docu-drama about the making of a silent film with drab characters and boring plot lines. How could anyone make pirates boring??? Well, this book manages to do just that. For anyone reading this series for the first time - do yourself a huge favor and omit this book. It is insulting to the reader and to the characters of Holmes, Russell and even Mycroft. What a shame to include such an inferior book in this great series.

A Shame About the Narrator
Revisado: 11-06-11
The story is a classic and I felt it would be a pleasure to listen to it again on a long road trip with my grand-children. Unfortunately, the narrator seriously put my grand-children off. Her tone was patronizing and put on... like she was reading to children aged two or three in a Victorian nursery. My grand-children felt like she was talking down to them and consequently couldn't get beyond the narration to appreciate the story. In fact, as we tried to listen to the book, they began to mimic the voice and tone of the narrator and this became the fodder for jokes for the entire trip. I believe the narrator seriously misjudged her audience because this is not a story that one would read to a 2-3 year old in the first place. For what it's worth, the first part of the book is the worst so if you can get through that, the story itself makes up for the narration.
