Historia
It's 1990 in London and Tom Hargreaves has it all: a burgeoning career as a reporter, fierce ambition and a brisk disregard for the "peasants"—ordinary people, his readers, easy tabloid fodder. His star seems set to rise when he stumbles across a sensational scoop: a dead child on a London estate, grieving parents beloved across the neighborhood, and the finger of suspicion pointing at one reclusive family of Irish immigrants and “bad apples”: the Greens. At their heart sits Carmel: beautiful, otherworldly, broken, and once destined for a future beyond her circumstances.

This is a short book, great story of an Irish family in a series of tragedies. Pretty compelling.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age 13 she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate - a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 04-15-25
I find all of Jodi Picoult’s books to be compelling and surprising, but this one is exceptional. The end of the book twist was next level “didn’t see that one coming.” The emotional expression and honesty, the humor, the characters; all were great. Highly recommended.

As in all of her books, the author nails the human emotions and reactions and relationships around a tragedy. This had me take a deep look at my own bullying as a preteen. Powerful book

Historia
Sometimes, we know shockingly little about the people we think we know best. Inspector Gil Hill, head of Detroit Homicide Division, was the first to explain my husband's twisted behavior to me. Hill bluntly disclosed that Al had led a double life for the previous 18 months in a red-light district in the inner city using the alias "Dr. Miller". He had frequently been seen in the company of a burly pimp and young prostitute and had been supporting their salacious lifestyle.

Great story, awful reading
Revisado: 02-19-25
This book is very interesting and well organized. The story of the murder and events that lead to it is horrific. The story of what it did to the survivors is well told and extremely thoughtful. However.., the reading of the story was awful. It was as if she had never seen the script before. Many times, there was a stop, as if the end of a sentence, then she continued. Odd words were emphasized, as if the content of a sentence was not understood. Simple words were mispronounced. At one point there were background noises!! Worst was hearing her inhale through her nose. I’d never heard that in all the books I’ve listened to.

This book has so many layers, so many stories. I’ve read a lot of Holocaust literature, but this, while fiction, is one of the most profound. Right up to the last minite!

Historia
Margot and James are broken up—for good this time. James made sure of it when he dropped the bomb on Margot: that he doesn’t want kids, ever. Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Revisado: 02-01-25
This book is such a great ride! I could not put it down. Two parallel stories, one in the present, one almost 500 years in the past. Now I want to go read Shakespeare, which seemed drudgery in school.

Great to continue the series.
Revisado: 11-07-24
I enjoyed the first books in the Into the Wilderness series and did not realize this was a continuation. It has next generation characters, but still harkens back to Paradise, NY, and the original Bonners. Having moved from northern New Mexico a year ago, I loved reading about the early days of Santa Fe and all the various factions there in 1856. A great book, packed full of history. Recommended!

Entertaining
Revisado: 10-26-24
The story is engrossing, a nice description of a sociopath. But some of the dialogue is just lame. And the reader misses emotional cues. But even with these flaws, I could not put it down.
