Historia
World War II is usually seen as a titanic land battle, decided by mass armies, most importantly those on the Eastern Front. Phillips Payson O'Brien shows us the war in a completely different light. In this compelling new history of the Allied path to victory, he argues that in terms of production, technology, and economic power, the war was far more a contest of air and sea than of land supremacy.

A compelling analysis of industrial priorities in WWII . Definitely worth the read but this book is heavy on facts and statistics. Don’t read this book unless you are already very familiar with the general history of WWII.

Interesting ideas - technology but ok overall story
Revisado: 11-14-23
The tech ideas and deployments were a lot to think about . The story is just ok . It was a bit choppy. A major plot point is very contrived . Worth it if you are interested in the Taiwan situation . Overall entertaining.

Historia
The fighting between the German and Russian armies in the Rzhev Salient during World War II was so grisly, so murderous, and saw such vast losses that the troops called the campaign 'The Meat Grinder'. Though millions of men would fight and die there, the Rzhev Salient does not have the name recognition of Leningrad or Moscow. It has been largely ignored by Western historians – until now.

Another quality study by Prit Buttar
Revisado: 02-12-23
Yes , the narrator sounds better suited for reading Huck Fin and he had at least two different pronunciations of Wehrmacht . Oh well, not that bad .
If you are a fan of Buttar’s other work this has the usual quality : interesting overall analysis on front and back end , a sea of details and stories for most of the book .

Historia
Despite the best efforts of a number of historians, many aspects of the ferocious struggle between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union during the Second World War remain obscure or shrouded in myth. One of the most persistent of these is the notion - largely created by many former members of its own officer corps in the immediate postwar period - that the German Army was a paragon of military professionalism and operational proficiency whose defeat on the Eastern Front was solely attributable to the amateurish meddling of a crazed former Corporal.

Narrow Thesis
Revisado: 08-01-22
Feel like the author had a narrow thesis that he thinks blows the lid on eastern front research . All the author proved to me was that the Germans were able to maintain established troop strengths in 41-43. Would the Germans have trained, equipped , and deployed more divisions if they had the manpower, industrial resources, and infrastructure to do so ? Yes .

Historia
D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed the Allied landing, have become the defining episode of World War II in the west - the object of books, films, television series, and documentaries. Yet as familiar as it is, as James Holland makes clear in his definitive history, many parts of the OVERLORD campaign, as it was known, are still shrouded in myth and assumed knowledge.

Great Study of Normandy - could have been a narrower focus

James Holland brings new research and revelations to the Normandy campaign. To me the main thesis of the book was a defense of Montgomery. This material was great I just wish Holland decided to focus his book on what he clearly wanted to write about .

Historia
Using archival records, in this book, David Stahel presents a history of Germany's summer campaign from the perspective of the two largest and most powerful Panzer groups on the Eastern front. Stahel's research provides a fundamental reassessment of Germany's war against the Soviet Union, highlighting the prodigious internal problems of the vital Panzer forces and revealing that their demise in the earliest phase of the war undermined the whole German invasion.

Original research leads to deeper insights
Revisado: 02-21-22
There is a lot of nuance in how to interpret the early battles on the Eastern Front. The author presents a clear picture as to why Barbarossa failed by August 41.
This is an analysis of German high command. Private soldier battle stories are limited and used only as evidence to support larger points . A decent knowledge of the Eastern Front is probably needed to understand the author’s deep dive analysis .
The author brought insights I felt were fascinating and fresh . Explaining how the Wehrmacht was actually screwed even though they had seemingly achieved enormous victories was framed and argued perfectly . Definitely recommend to fellow WWII nerds .

Historia
Although he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the first shots were fired at Gettysburg, Union general George G. Meade guided his forces to victory in the Civil War's most pivotal battle. Commentators often dismiss Meade when discussing the great leaders of the Civil War. But in this long-anticipated book, Kent Masterson Brown draws on an expansive archive to reappraise Meade's leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg.

From the General’s POV
Revisado: 01-18-22
An excellent analysis of the battle of Gettysburg from the Union Side . This book was strong because it stuck to its topic. A lot of civil war battle books are simply a stringing together of good ole boy stories with a loose overall narrative. Not this work , it sticks to Meade and his POV . The pre and post battle were covered with new (2021) well researched insights . I especially liked the research into the supply of the army of the Potomac and Meads’ strategy going into Gettysburg .
If you are a big fan of the genre you will also find fascinating the author directly calling out some prominent civil war writers on poor Gettysburg and Meade research .

Historia
Every major decision governing our diverse, majority-female, and increasingly liberal country bears the stamp of the US Senate, yet the Senate allows an almost exclusively White, predominantly male, and radically conservative minority of the American electorate to impose its will on the rest of us. How did we get to this point? In Kill Switch, Adam Jentleson argues that shifting demographics alone cannot explain how Mitch McConnell harnessed the Senate and turned it into a powerful weapon of minority rule.

Nothing wrong with the narrator
Revisado: 05-28-21
I’ve listened to multiple books by Ochlan , he reads academic non-fiction. It seems the complaints are from fiction readers use to the narrator doing voices for characters . He’s a worthy professional .
As for the book Jentleson makes his point clearly . The filibuster needs to go . Book is a history of senate obstruction followed by a good analysis of modern day with potential solutions .

Uncomfortable
Revisado: 12-13-20
The Plot is so sinister in some ways that you just don’t feel very good reading it . I would have liked to have seen some more world building but for the below reasons I get why that was limited .
I came to this book for the sci/fi dark future plot . It’s there and at times interesting . But that’s only half the book . The other half is a Dom- Sub gay romance novel that explores other lgtbtq themes focused on consent /identity/ trauma. While I found some of it interesting and enlightening I would say that you the reader should like reading extended
sex scenes to fully enjoy this novel .

Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

Amazing Details
Revisado: 09-14-20
Picks up right where the last one left off. The narrative and organization create a great flow to this long book . You can almost feel yourself zooming in from the overall picture of the war down to buck privates and seamen.
I’m one of those wwii avid reader types and was worried about reading long chapters on battles I was pretty familiar with . Toll brings new perspectives and details about the Pacific War. From the bloated flies of Saipan infesting an admirals dinner offshore to an in depth look at Japanese social psychology for waging war this book brought to light the war in the Pacific . I also appreciate Toll’s research on the logistics involved in the Pacific Theatre.
