Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

John Grisham’s best
Revisado: 03-09-23
This is John Grisham’s best book (and I’ve read them all). Deeply moving, poignant, and full of the ups and downs. Highly recommend.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Excellent read
Revisado: 01-12-23
The character development in this book is some of the best of Grisham’s career (aside from Jake Brigance and his folks obviously). This is a riveting story and though it spans decades and is hours long, it grabs your attention and won’t let go.

Excellent
Revisado: 09-16-22
An excellent and psychological read. I think the negative reviews were because the readers don’t like to be disturbed. There are some subjects that some feel are off limits—many of which arise in this book. The story is excellent and compelling. I think reader sensitivities are the reason they didn’t care for the book. So, if you can handle some seriously disturbed subject matters, do yourself a favor and spend the credit on this one.

Excellent book but ending sputtered
Revisado: 03-17-22
This book solidly kept my attention the entire time. It is truly binge worthy. The author is a wonderful storyteller and the characters have such depth. I wish the ending had been better. Or maybe different. It just felt like a slow fizzle after expecting a huge climax like the book had provided throughout the story. All in all, excellent book. Definitely will read more from this author.

Historia
After 13-year-old Keeley Moore disappears during a camping trip with her parents, psychic Charlie Payne is invited to work the case by the local deputy. But the connection Charlie makes with the girl is a gossamer thread. If Charlie didn't know better, she'd say someone is blocking the child's energy from reaching her. Someone with a connection to the supernatural.

Historia
A wish is the strongest form of magic. It's also the most dangerous. For psychic Charlie Payne being haunted is an everyday experience. When Charlie agrees to help her cousin forage for furniture at an auction she expects to steer her cousin clear of any lingering spirits. But a child's wish makes that impossible. When her cousin brings home an object with a ghost-child attached to it, Charlie finds herself drawn into a 60-year-old mystery. Her instinct is to help the child move toward the light.

Almost Unbearable Narration
Revisado: 02-08-22
The narration is terrible. The “southern”accents are painful. If a book has southern characters, please please please get a southern narrator. The narrator’s different inflections for the different characters are eye rolling. The women sound like children and the children sound like robots. The story was okay but I would be curious to know how many times the phrase so and so “said” is used. It may not be so bad reading the book but listening to it is distracting and takes away from the story. Hopefully the next story is better and the narrator is different. I’ve become invested in this series.

Leigh Harker’s quiet suburban home was her sanctuary for more than a decade, until things abruptly changed. Curtains open by themselves. Radios turn off and on. And a dark figure looms in the shadows of her bedroom door at night, watching her, waiting for her to finally let down her guard enough to fall asleep.

Laborious
Revisado: 01-13-22
I love Darcy Coates. She is an excellent author. But this book missed the mark. This would have been a great novella. The inner monologue is the main character makes up almost the entirety of the book and drones on for far too long. The story has large gaps that never come together. I almost stopped this one multiple times but kept going back hoping there would be a big payoff. There wasn’t. The last 2 chapters are good but the buildup was tedious and felt like work. Skip this book. Hoping her next book is back up to par.

Revisado: 11-19-21
Never have I ever read a book like this. I am a trial lawyer and it is SUPERB. I saw the comments about the narration and there is nothing wrong with it IMO. And I’m picky about narrators. This book is terrific.
