Blah. I would never have expected to be bored
Revisado: 04-16-24
reading a Tana French novel, but I had to force myself to keep going with this one. I really disliked the growling, draggy voice of the narrator, and many of the quirky townsfolk seemed like charicatures of themselves. (How many times in one conversation would one character call another "Sunny Jim"?)
There were times during the book when I thought the dark elements of the story were being ramped up, but no satisfying development or depth resulted from that.
I had read the novel prior to this one; (I thought the detective who'd retired to Ireland from Chicago sounded familiar),but that novel didn't linger in my memory like other novels by Ms. French have.
I really hope she retires this group of characters after this novel!

Historia
If Ridley Jones had slept 10 minutes later or had taken the subway instead of waiting for a cab, she would still be living the beautiful lie she used to call her life. She would still be the privileged daughter of a doting father and a loving mother. Her life would still be perfect, with only the tiny cracks of an angry junkie for a brother and a charming drunk with shady underworld connections for an uncle to mar the otherwise flawless whole.

The ending...
Revisado: 02-18-24
was just too pat.
I won't spoil it by saying why. It was a fascinating premise with interesting characters and some lines I actually thought about writing down. I wish the author had stepped back from tidying up with a rather hallmarkian summation.

Historia
Penny, an artist, has lived in the same apartment for decades, surrounded by the artifacts and keepsakes of her long life. She is resigned to the mundane rituals of old age, until things start to slip. Before her longtime partner passed away years earlier, provisions were made, unbeknownst to her, for a room in a unique long-term care residence, where Penny finds herself after one too many “incidents”.

Meh.
Revisado: 11-23-22
The ending was a rather painful and abrupt conclusion for me, though the premise of the novel was strong and fascinating.
I got totally irritated by the narrator's voice towards the end. Also, she went from dispirited and inert to empowered and rather whiny far more quickly than felt anywhere close to realistic in terms of character development.

Beautiful and harrowing
Revisado: 11-19-22
This is one of those books in which dread and anticipation are entertwined. There are jolts of awareness that are startling. The worst happenings are hinted at so strongly that even the events that never actually occurred will never be forgotten.
If you are hungry for a book that offers you deep knowledge of the characters and all aspects of their personalities as they grapple with the world into which they were born, look past the initial immersion in the minutiae of farming.

Historia
Injured in a freak fall, novelist Gerry Andersen is confined to a hospital bed in his glamorous high-rise apartment, dependent on two women he barely knows: his incurious young assistant, and a dull, slow-witted night nurse. Then late one night, the phone rings. The caller claims to be the “real” Aubrey, the alluring title character from his most successful novel, Dream Girl. But there is no real Aubrey. She’s a figment born of a writer’s imagination, despite what many believe or claim to know.

Terrific novel!
Revisado: 08-29-20
The plot was memorable, many of the characters were lovable, and there was enough suspense to keep me wanting to keep listening. There were some humorous moments, too, that had me laughing out loud. I hope to meet some of these characters again.
