Loved this!! Compelling, Intellectual and Fun

WOW, this is history?
Revisado: 12-01-23
This book weaves together the lives of men and women to tell the story of the 18th and 19th century. It is entertaining, funny, comprehensive, innovative, enlightening, and just plain fun. As much as I am impressed about the history and people of these two centuries, I am even more impressed with the author/professor. He bubbles over with knowledge, and he connects these lives together so they make an understandable and relatable story. Every once in a while he stumbles over his own enthusiasm and his tongue can not keep up with his brain. These are few and far between and a charming reminder of his humanity. His presentation is amazing. He pronounces the German and French words like a local. And yet he speaks with a clear understandable English that sound like it is from Chicago. I loved this course and it left me wanting more.

Historia
In this spirited account, Billie Jean King details her life's journey to find her true self. She recounts her groundbreaking tennis career - six years as the top-ranked woman in the world, 20 Wimbledon championships, 39 grand-slam titles, and her watershed defeat of Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes". She poignantly recalls the cultural backdrop of those years and the profound impact on her worldview from the women's movement, the assassinations and anti-war protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, eventually, the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

BJK you are so cool
Revisado: 08-23-23
I loved this book. At first when I heard BJK voice, which is different from the usual narrator, I was a little taken aback. But I got used to it, and loved it. There is real emotion in the stories, and it came to live for me.
BJK had an amazing life. She is unbelievable positive for a person who had to break so many discrimination patterns. She never gave up. She has a special talent for turning foes into friends and defeats into victories. From her child hood stories to hanging out with Elton John, she is always upbeat and positive. I can only recommend this book, especially for young people who have to overcome some discrimination.

Historia
An innocent man is about to be executed. Only a guilty man can save him. Travis Boyette is such a man. In 1998, in the small East Texas city of Sloan, he abducted, raped, and strangled a popular high-school cheerleader. He buried her body so that it would never be found, then watched in amazement as police and prosecutors arrested and convicted Donté Drumm, a local football star, and marched him off to death row.

Good but not great
Revisado: 08-23-23
I enjoyed listening to this book, the language is easy and well crafted. The narrator is American and he has a mid-Western accent, and sometimes mimics the southern drawl of Kansas and Texas. It makes it an all-American story, which was perfect to satisfied my nostalgic desire. It is a nice length about 14 hours, and has well developed characters and a plot with a couple of twists.
It is about a false confession by a black football player, for raping and killing a girl. The real killer appears and wants to make it right (kind of).
I did not give this book 5 stars because it is a little flat. Typical for John Grisham, the good characters are very good and only good, and the bad characters are very bad and only bad. He has simplified the complexity how good and evil reside in the same person and makes it very easy for us to chose a side. I am annoyed at the one dimensionality of the mother, the ever loving, self-sacrificing elderly women who does not have a single controversial thought. I am annoyed at the 100% incomprehensible evil of the bad guy. As the mother is a saint, the bad guy is unable to have a single nice thought. The problem with this pre digested judgement of characters is, it makes it dull. And it is not realistic, in every person there is a good and there is bad. I would tell Mr. Grisham to mix it up a little in his characters, and let us be puzzled about who we like or who we believe.
I liked the book; it was easy and entertaining. I would listen to it again, maybe in a year or two when I have forgotten about the characters.

I learned much, excellent subject and excellent writing. The subjects covered are complicated, and sometimes I wished for a more in debt look. I guess that is my homework.

Historia
In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.
