This is an excellent adaptation of Tom Holland’s original work, that expands on several subtextual aspects from the film. It appears to be the first part of a new trilogy that I am looking forward to seeing completed.

This is an enjoyable inspiration of what to me is one of the seminal Werewolf films of all time. While similar in basic plot, this story is its own and still well worth the time taken with it. My only criticism is that it feels very much of its time, the mid 70s, which I found a little distracting.

Where to begin? This book was a racist, sexist, bigoted nightmare of Buckaroo Banzai fan fiction. The macho posturing of the narrator is off putting and in my opinion out of character from the likable voice of the same character in both the original movie and it’s novelization. The performance is slightly better than the material deserves but does not save this work.
The style of these stories are not fit for contemporary audiences and change this series into one that not only was uncomfortable to consume but doesn’t end, it just stops. I understand that much like “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eight Dimension” this is meant to be just another chapter in the ever continuing adventures of the titular hero, but usually there is some resolution to the story with a cliffhanger to lead the reader to the next chapter. This does not so that, it just ends with no conclusion to the conflicts presented let alone a satisfying one.
All in all if you enjoyed the 80s classic that was the first adventure of the Hong Kong Cavaliers we had the pleasure of viewing/reading skip this one. It is not worth all the years of anticipation.

Impact Winter Part 2 rehashes a number of plot points with Penelope from Part 1, but with a different character as her foil, as well as spending far to little time setting up the new status quo with Felix and Darcy. The ending feels needlessly convoluted and clunky to, in my opinion, give it a “Premium Television” feel which I grew tired of back in 1999 with Joss Wheaton and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A drastic departure in quality of storytelling from Part 1, leaving me not wanting to bite at the bait for any potential next season.

While not bereft of a supernatural element, quite the contrary in fact, this is one of the better low key King tales. Not as chilling as a ‘Salem’s Lot or IT, Duma Key tells its tale with a reality that makes the characters fully realized. An excellent read that far exceeds other King stories of a similar scope, such as Rose Madder, Insomnia, or Lisey’s Story.
