Historia
There are few people Nero Wolfe respects, and Lon Cohen of the New York Gazette is one of them. So when Cohen asks for a favor, the famously brilliant - and notoriously lazy - detective is inclined to listen. According to Cohen, someone wants to kill the Gazette’s gossip columnist, Cameron Clay. Death threats are a regular hazard for Clay, who’s hurled insults and accusations at every boldfaced name in the five boroughs. But the latest threats have carried a more sinister tone.

Not the best, but enjoyable
Revisado: 02-02-24
The story is a little dragged out, and the result took shape well in advance, but Archie and Wolfe engage with each other amusingly, and there’s enough on the other characters to hold interest. The narrator is clear and skillful though I prefer Gansler’s version of Wolfe, as more resonant, less speedy.

Historia
Donna Leon's Death at La Fenice, the first novel in her beloved Commissario Guido Brunetti series, introduced listeners to the glamorous and cutthroat world of opera and one of Italy's finest living sopranos, Flavia Petrelli - then a suspect in the poisoning of a renowned German conductor. Years after Brunetti cleared her name, Flavia has returned to Venice and La Fenice to sing the lead in Tosca.

Slow tempo
Revisado: 01-09-24
Though I enjoy other Donna Leon’s Brunetti novels, this one seemed slow, even padded in places. It’s not just the opera lore, which I enjoyed, but other stuffing too. The ending, however, almost compensated.

A mixed experience
Revisado: 12-10-23
Too much cold blooded pursuing and killing. Some familiar knightly honor and courage and steadfast love, and some humor. The relationship between Spenser and Susan is complicated and interesting, but I have heard that Parker said he made Susan annoying, and while I sympathize with her confusions, find it unclear why every male loves her so much. The narrator is quite good even if he tends to drop the endings of his sentences. Nonetheless, I enjoy the writing and the characters.

Historia
Three men have been murdered in a Sussex village, and Scotland Yard has been called in. It's a baffling case. The victims are soldiers who survived the horrors of the Great War only to meet a ghastly end in the quiet English countryside two years later. Each had been garroted, with small ID disks left in their mouths. But even Scotland Yard's presence doesn't deter this vicious and clever killer.

Complicated story, difficult narrator
Revisado: 12-23-22
Story kept me interested, but the narrator softens and slurs voices other than the main one.

Roland Britten, accountant and amateur jockey, awakens one morning to find he can’t move his hands—because he is tied up with netting, held captive where no light penetrates and no amount of yelling will get any attention. But why?

Not one of Francis’s best, but still interesting.
Revisado: 07-14-22
He does make even accountancy interesting. Too much straining for pain and endurance, so the plot creaks a bit. Narrator mostly strong and clear, but hurries the end of sentences.

Historia
"Sadly, death at the races is not uncommon. However, three in a single afternoon was sufficiently unusual to raise more than one eyebrow." It's the third death on Cheltenham Gold Cup Day that really troubles super-sleuth Sid Halley. Last seen in 1995's Come to Grief, former champion jockey Halley knows the perils of racing all too well but, in his day, jockeys didn't usually reach the finishing line with three .38 rounds in the chest.

Good but not the best
Revisado: 05-22-22
I'm a fan of Dick Francis for the characters, the texture, the integrity. This one has all that, but it's slowed by some padding in the plot.
