Historia
When MacThomas Pockets finished his last tour as part of the Scottish Special Forces, he was hired to consult for a film director to finesse some scenes that weren't working. In a twist he never saw coming, he ended up moving to L.A. to work as the bodyguard for movie star Maybe Joe Sue.

Too little. Too slow
Revisado: 12-05-24
I listened for almost four hours and finally gave up. I couldn’t bear to listen to another six. I appreciate all the great reviews but i just couldn’t get into this book. I like the character Pockets very much. The others, including the heroine, not so much. The plot moves at a snail’s pace. There is only very occasional action, at least in first four hours. Based on the other reviews, there is apparently a golden nugget at the end of the book. If you are very, vey patient, I hope you find it!

Historia
For the crime of stealing bread, 14-year-old May receives a life sentence: She must become a Sin Eater - a shunned woman, brutally marked, whose fate is to hear the final confessions of the dying, eat ritual foods symbolizing their sins as a funeral rite, and thereby shoulder their transgressions to grant their souls access to heaven. Orphaned and friendless, apprenticed to an older Sin Eater who cannot speak to her, May must make her way in a dangerous and cruel world she barely understands.

Good narration for peculiar story
Revisado: 09-27-24
It was good to learn about sin eaters. The author wrote very well and the topic was well researched. Great narration. I just had to force myself to listen to this. It bordered on the psychologically disturbing for me. The last chapter was the best, and probably the only one I liked.

A pseudo educated mishmash
Revisado: 03-31-24
First of all, I am unfortunately a boomer and do apologize. I clearly see the stupidity, laziness and selfishness of my generation, myself included. Please accept my apologies. I have been trying to reform for many years now. The failure to satisfactorily address climate change will always negatively mark my generation. It haunts me now. However, by using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to diagnose sociopathy in groups of people who lived during the boomer years, the author shows a reproachful ignorance. The DSM is meant to help doctors accurately classify mental illness in individuals seeking help. Accurate classification provides a gateway to the best multimodal therapies backed by statistical analyses for a particular patient. In using the DSM completely out of context, the author proves nothing at all. To lift diagnoses from a medical manual and apply them thusly to historical figures, and groups of figures, only demonstrates reproachful ignorance. Homo sapiens throughout its history has shown itself capable of egregious acts of violence and cruelty. The baby boomer generation thus represents only another lap of the humanity’s sad waves against the shoreline. Baby boomers are certainly not the first “sociopathic” generation. I had to stop listening. The pseudo logic and author’s anger make no sense. I am surprised the book was published.

Historia
Author A.J. Jacobs discovers that his coffee - and every other item in our lives - would not be possible without hundreds of people we usually take for granted: farmers, chemists, artists, presidents, truckers, mechanics, biologists, miners, smugglers, and goatherds. By thanking these people face-to-face, Jacobs finds some much-needed brightness in his life. Gratitude does not come naturally to Jacobs, but he sets off on the journey on a dare from his son. And by the end, it’s clear to him that scientific research on gratitude is true. Gratitude’s benefits are legion.

Upset author extolled single use plastic lids.
Revisado: 10-08-21
The premise of the book is great, and I intend to finish it. I completely freaked out early in the book though, when the author praised and gave thanks for single use throwaway coffee cups and plastic lids. Does he live on another planet ? It is way not cool to do what he is doing every day. Mr. Jacobs' next book needs to be based on a year of living without single use items. (I am trying to, and it is very, very difficult). So, I give thanks that I live in a community, and have a group of friends, that are more thoughtful about careless habits.

Historia
In a book that's both provocative and promising, holistic psychiatrist Kelly Brogan, MD, author of A Mind of Your Own, shows us that we don't have to medicate our mental, emotional, and physical pain away - that the best way out is through. She explodes the mistaken belief that our symptoms - from mood changes to irritability to fogginess and fatigue - are evidence that we are sick or broken. Then she charts a new path to get real, get well, and get free.

Attached PDF only has 5 stupid recipes
Revisado: 09-30-19
It would be better to buy a printed version of this book. I will look at my audio investment though as something which may inspire me to buy the text version someday. I do not look at my Audible purchase as a complete waste of money.
This is groundbreaking material, of course, and I view the author as a real pioneer. This is a must read for anyone on antidepressants. It is entirely possible that there is nothing really seriously wrong with you. I had already quit my antidepressants cold turkey (after almost 40 years), and it was interesting to see a whole chapter devoted to how to withdraw from them properly. This chapter would be an excellent reference for those interested in discontinuing their meds.
Unfortunately, the author promotes heavy meat-eating, without any mention of regard to those of us who do not eat animal products. This tells me she is not entirely aware of all the people she is reaching. May she expand her consciousness as her own journey progresses! The 5 recipes included in the PDF are simple meaty dishes one can find in any keto cookbook.
I appreciate the spiritual dimension of the book, but again, the author is not aware of all who she is touching. Glad she is so spiritually active for sure, but TMI to be tacked on to the more profound sections of the book. Just look at it as her disclosure of her own spiritual activity (a blog like portion of the book really).
Only buy the the Audible version if you have a bunch of credits to use up, or feel you can afford to pay for an expensive appetizer (audiobook) as well as an expensive entree (the printed book) if you are still hungry.

Gripping tale with police dog narrative
Revisado: 10-24-13
If you could sum up Suspect in three words, what would they be?
Cop, dog, criminals.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes.
Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Dog perspective brought tears to my eyes.
Any additional comments?
I knocked off one star because I was able to guess the plot, but loved the way the story was written. The telling of the tale, including what the police dog was thinking, was very much worth my time.
