Burroughs writes one of his best 'sci fi' works in the Martian series in this follow-up to Princess of Mars, etc. At his most inventive and imaginative, full of surprises and action, it is great to read or listen to. I don't think John Bohlen is the best reader, but is adequate. His female voices are hard to understand. Otherwise, this would be 5 star! It's too bad someone doesn't make this series into movies!!

Perhaps I would enjoy this plot more if the reader had more lively delivery. A generally sad story, of course, in which foolishness is justified by 'social restraint'. A wonder the English ever got together! Still worth reading for the social context.

Ellis Peters(she, by the way) puts us square into the 11th century with Brother Cadfael in his Shrewsbury Monastery. Good plot, but I find Vanessa a little hard to understand at times. Fair paced reading, though.
