Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

A Dickens Disappointment
Revisado: 05-15-24
I admit it: I was drawn in by the title's witty play on the name of my favorite book by my favorite author--"David Copperfield " by Charles Dickens. I was fully prepared for a coming-of-age story in modern times dealing with more modern struggles than the 19th-century classic. What I was not prepared for was the abundance of gratuitous foul language and graphic sexual description that permeated the book from beginning to end. I struggled to make myself finish the book; but I come away from it with a sense of having been corrupted and involved in something illicit.
I can appreciate the authors attempt to form characters with names and some traits similar to Dickens's own characters; but the effort to do so seems ironically wasted, since readers who love the "David Copperfield" characters and storyline most are probably the least likely to enjoy or appreciate the "Copperhead" counterpart. I found it offensive, foul, disturbing, and certainly disappointing. I wonder how Dickens himself would react to this strange imitation.

Good First Effort
Revisado: 12-07-23
The story line of this work includes a fresh take on a few traditional elements but is largely predictable, at least until it nears its end. The vagueness in description and simplicity of sentence structure hint at a still maturing style. In spite of those perceived weaknesses in the work itself, the listener will likely find himself deeply engaged with the story through the rich and skillful voice performance of the narrator/reader.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Left a Bad Taste in My Mouth
Revisado: 01-19-23
Although the book has many attributes of a good read, with a strong female protagonist that I really wanted to love and root wholeheartedly for, I found the obvious jabs at Christianity and Creationists too unsettling to overlook. In dealing with real injustices and inequalities in the story's 1950s and '60s setting, the author pushes too hard at imposing the modern "woke" ideology onto the reader.
Furthermore, the characters use an excess of profanity and otherwise offensive language that seems completely unneccessary.
On a lighter note, as much as I do love a faithful supportive dog, I found the "humanization" of the dog "6:30" to be so very exaggerated (as in having much of the story told through his well-organized , logical, and coherent thoughts) that I could not stay engaged with the narrative.

Finally, a Book Boys Will Love!
Revisado: 01-16-23
Characters and circumstances every boy-mom, middle-school teacher, or camp counselor will recognize and chuckle over, with enough edge-of-your seat suspense and adventure to captivate the typically short attention span of boys of middle-school age. The girls will love it too for its spunky heroine as well as the admirable hero.
The narration is absolutely out of this world as each character is given somewhat exaggerated idiosyncrasies of voice. LOVE IT!!!

When young orphan, Oliver Twist, is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker, he leaves behind years of miserable servitude and mistreatment at an English workhouse. Hoping to move on to better things, he decides to escape his new, equally dreary surroundings and head to London. It is there that the novel unravels as Oliver meets a host of larger-than-life characters, including The Artful Dodger, a high-ranking member of a juvenile pickpocketing gang, and their elderly leader, Fagin.

Combines some of the best writing (Charles Dickens) with some of the best narration (Jonathan Price) to bring a moving story with memorable characters brought to life. This was a delight to listen to!

Historia
Two on a Tower is Hardy's ninth novel and contains perhaps his most complete use of the theme of love across the class and age divide, to beautifully depict Hardy's reverence for science and astronomy. The unhappily married Lady Constantine breaks all the rules of social etiquette when she falls in love with young Swithin St. Cleeve, an astronomer and her social inferior. Despite their differences that society deems unacceptable, together, from an astronomical observatory, the lovers 'sweep the heavens'.

When Army lieutenant Philip Nolan rashly proclaims that he never wants to hear about the United States again, he has no idea that his wishes will be so literally carried out. Sentenced to spend the rest of his life in exile, never to hear news of the US again, Nolan truly learns what it means to be “without a country.” Originally published amid the division and chaos of the Civil War, The Man Without a Country gets right to the heart of some timeless and universal themes. Philip Nolan’s poignant tale will make you rethink the true meaning of patriotism.

Classic Story, Amateur Narration
Revisado: 10-02-22
The tale as written, in spite of the fascinating premise, does seem to be stretched far beyond the needed length, but its end at least is satisfying. The performance of the narration here seems somewhat amateurish, with many mispronounced words, refular awkward hesitations, and even skipped lines. Disappointing indeed.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

Not the Macbeth That You Know and Love
Revisado: 08-24-22
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the novelization of Hamlet by these same authors, this attempt to make Macbeth into a novel so greatly reimagined the characters and stretched the storyline that one hardly recognizes Shakespeare's original story in it. I found it to be disturbingly dark and over-sexualized. it is definitely not a book that will get more than one read by me.

Summertime in Bleak Harbor means tourists, overpriced restaurants, and the Dragonfly Festival. One day before the much-awaited and equally chaotic celebration, Danny Peters, the youngest member of the family that founded the town five generations ago, disappears. When Danny’s mother, Carey, and stepfather, Pete, receive a photo of their brilliant, autistic, and socially withdrawn son tied to a chair, they fear the worst. But there’s also more to the story. Someone is sending them ominous texts and emails filled with information no one else should have.

Gratuitous Filthy Language and Descriptions
Revisado: 06-02-20
The horrific language and filthy descriptions ruined what might otherwise have been a good storyline. I will never know for sure, because I couldn't get through even a third of the book. It was disgusting and left me feeling defiled. Sickening...just sickening.
