Historia
When itinerant cave diver James Tighe receives an invitation to billionaire Nathan Joyce's private island, he thinks it must be a mistake. But Tighe's unique skill set makes him a prime candidate for Joyce's high-risk venture to mine a near-Earth asteroid - with the goal of kick-starting an entire off-world economy. The potential rewards and personal risks are staggering, but the competition is fierce, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Isolated and pushed beyond their breaking points, Tighe and his fellow 21st-century adventurers must rely on each other to survive....

Near future concept, last century sexism.
Revisado: 07-12-19
This will be the first Suarez book I won't finish. I still recommend Daemon and Freedom Inc to people four or five times a year, I believe they are that prescient and that well written, actual sci-fi classics.
Writing women has never been Suarez's strongest suit, it's what keeps his work, IMO, in the "transitional period" of science fiction writing, one foot firmly planted in a past where no alien race or mind-bending technology was as exotic and hard to describe, apparently, as a woman's body or thought process.
Suarez does pretty well in Kill Decision, but several chapters into this book and every female scientist, executive or engineer is described the same way...this or that nonsexual, interesting defining feature...and she's hot.
I would probably have eaten this up at 14, but that was almost 40 years ago.
There is so much good sci-fi out there right now, from so many different voices. I just don't have teen boy levels of time to waste on teen boy level books.

Historia
The world is in turmoil. From India to Turkey and from Poland to the United States, authoritarian populists have seized power. As a result democracy itself may now be at risk. Two core components of liberal democracy - individual rights and the popular will - are at war with each other. As the role of money in politics soared and important issues were taken out of public contestation, a system of "rights without democracy" took hold. Populists who rail against this say they want to return power to the people. But in practice they create a system of "democracy without rights."

A Must Read
Revisado: 03-07-19
A real comprehensive look at what is happening in the United States and around the world as populist governments seem to pop up all over. if you are a fan of Mounk's excellent podcast you will find the narrator a little underwhelming in comparison to Mounk's lively way of speaking.
There is a lot to learn in here and, coming from the left, some sacred cows slain.

Historia
You cannot bounce back from hardship. You can only move through it. There is a path through pain to wisdom, through suffering to strength, and through fear to courage if we have the virtue of resilience. In 2012, Eric Greitens unexpectedly heard from a former SEAL comrade, a brother-in-arms he hadn’t seen in a decade. Zach Walker had been one of the toughest of the tough. But ever since he returned home from war to his young family in a small logging town, he’d been struggling. Without a sense of purpose, plagued by PTSD, and masking his pain with heavy drinking, he needed help. Zach and Eric started writing and talking nearly every day, as Eric set down his thoughts on what it takes to build resilience in our lives.

A gifted young black man calling himself Victor has struck a bargain with federal law enforcement, working as a bounty hunter for the US Marshal Service. He's got plenty of work. In this version of America, slavery continues in four states called "the Hard Four". Victim of my overblown expectations.
Revisado: 07-10-17
if I had just happened across this book on Audible I'm sure I would have given it an extra star. Unfortunately I was recommended this book by many people who really thought it was one of the best books of the year. I think it is a very good book and I enjoyed it but I wouldn't put it in the top 10 books I read last year it's an interesting story, especially in these times, and I would not want anyone to not pick it up because of this review but I would say just temper your expectations a little bit and don't expect too much out of it. it is a good piece of serious genre fiction.aWxz,AAa

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Will now be my "Have you tried audiobooks?" go to.
Revisado: 03-24-17
Even without the timeliness of the book-tied of course to the world as it exists as I write this-this stands as one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. Frankly, Philip Roth has always intimated me as a reader, but Ron Silver's performance is so much more than a narration I can recommend this to anyone who, like me, thought Roth too brainy for them to grasp. The story is as much about a little boy coming of age in Newark between the wars as it is about a very believable alternate history. An alternate history illuminating just how quickly and easily a country can change when the die starts rolling against its previous character.

On a warm spring evening in South Los Angeles, a young man is shot and killed on a sidewalk minutes away from his home, one of the thousands of Black Americans murdered that year. His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes. But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift.

Grim but hopeful.
Revisado: 09-09-16
Great reading of a book about a wave of tragedy. The author drops enough crumbs of possible solutions to keep it from leaving one hopeless, and the strength of some detectives, victims and witnesses is inspiring.

Historia
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

Not much here.
Revisado: 06-01-15
Good narrator, but not much of a story fir her to work with. This was well written, but read-to me-like either an excellent short story drawn out into novel length or half of a really good book. I realize this is part of a trilogy, but in all honesty this seems more a prologue than a first book. The world he creates is mysterious and interesting, but this book establishes almost nothing of the internal logic of the world and raises many questions about major characters which are not resolved. Perhaps they are in later books, but I find that annoying as a reader who loves books in series.
It was a pleasant enough experience, but if I was not on a two credit per month plan and had paid cash for this, I would feel cheated, which is why I feel the need to rate it two instead of three stars.

Historia
On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest. Breq is both more than she seems and less than she was. Years ago, she was the Justice of Toren - a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of corpse soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy. An act of treachery has ripped it all away, leaving her with only one fragile human body.

Didn't live up to the hype.
Revisado: 06-19-14
Picked this up after hearing good things about it and seeing it won some awards. It wasn't terrible, but I honestly don't see what others find exciting about it. There are are some neat and unique ideas in here that I have not come across in my "advanced beginner" level of sci-fi fandom, but they are relegated to window dressing. I would love to read a book propelled by ideas about AI personalities, the difficulties of human/AI relationships or the ethical difference between human automatons and spaceships with personalities. All that stuff is in this book, but relegated to the edges of a very standard revenge story.
The narration was probably appropriate in its fairly monotone delivery, but it was hard to stick with from time to time.
I would be interested in future books that took place in this world if the story was more interesting. I finished it, but would recommend waiting for the author to revisit the world.
