Historia
Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to only a handful of people, is a harsh and lonely place. So when James Campbell's cousin Heimo Korth asked him to spend a summer building a cabin in the rugged Interior, Campbell hesitated about inviting his 15-year-old daughter, Aidan, to join him. Would she be able to withstand clouds of mosquitoes, the threat of grizzlies, bathing in an ice-cold river, and hours of grueling labor peeling and hauling logs? But once there, Aidan embraced the wild.

An amazing story, and too much cursing
Revisado: 07-11-24
I enjoyed this story about three trips that a father and daughter made into the Alaskan wilderness, and what it took to survive. Insights into the history and culture of the people and places added color and interest to a fascinating tale. I wish that the author had not included every expletive that was spoken. That was the only negative for me.

Historia
Rachel Walker is devoted to God. She prays every day, attends Calvary Christian Church with her family, helps care for her five younger siblings, dresses modestly, and prepares herself to be a wife and mother who serves the Lord with joy. But Rachel is curious about the world her family has turned away from and increasingly finds that neither the church nor her homeschool education has the answers she craves.

It was interesting and frustrating at the same time
Revisado: 06-17-24
I was interested to hear a story from the perspective of a girl who came out of a toxic fundamentalist Christian church system. The subject is intriguing but the story felt like it was plodding for the first half. I found myself frustrated with the main character’s angst and anguish about every little thing. It got more interesting once she left home, and then at the end when she went back to visit, it was driving me crazy again how naive she was. I wish there was more of her life after she went to school. I also wish there was a rating system for audiobooks like there is for movies. This one had some strong language in it.

Suffering, strength, struggle and sweetness all in one painful, beautiful life
Revisado: 06-21-21
I loved this story of Manal’s life. Her courage is amazing. It’s a revealing account of the condition of many oppressed people and how one person can start a change that can grow over time. This story is not for children, as there are brief descriptions of disturbing events and a few colorful words, but I thought that even the difficult subjects were handled very well. I also thought the narrator’s performance was excellent.

What happens when a nineteen-year-old boy leaves home and heads into the jungles to evangelize a murderous tribe of South American Indians? For Bruce Olson, it meant capture, disease, terror, loneliness, and torture. But what he discovered through trial and error has revolutionized the world of missions. Bruchko, which has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide, has been called "more fantastic and harrowing than anything Hollywood could concoct."

Inspiring, compelling and humbling
Revisado: 10-26-18
I was riveted! This is the harrowing true account of a Christian American missionary woman who spent four years in a POW camp in Indonesia during World War II. Through unimaginable suffering her faith was tested and she stood strong by relying on God. As I listened I wondered if my own faith could endure such a test. I am grateful for stories like this of those who have walked in the furnace of fiery trials and come through purified as gold. I would not recommend this for children as there is violence and torture described.
