Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Makes John Adam's Known
Revisado: 07-24-24
This book helps to flesh out John Adams. Though the second president, I must admit that I knew little of the man. I believe the author, though obviously an admirer, did a credible job of approaching his subject with balance. well written and well read! Highly recommended.

Historia
Two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize David McCullough tells the dramatic story behind the story about the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly: Wilbur and Orville Wright.
On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright's Wright Flyer became the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard. The Age of Flight had begun. How did they do it? And why?

Brought the Wright Brothers to life
Revisado: 02-06-24
I really enjoyed the author's reading style. it was laid back and yet compelling at the same time. it made that book easy to listen to. it is obvious that he had a high opinion of the brothers, and yet I believe was balanced to show the positive and negative. I lived about 20 mi from Dayton growing up. I now have a much greater appreciation for what that town produced that changed the world.

Historia
Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood-and the United States was truly born.

Great Overview and Well Done
Revisado: 07-21-23
I think Prof. Gallagher has done a commendable job of giving as comprehensive an overview as possible in this course. I enjoyed the summaries and realized that minute detail was not going to be possible, nor should it have been attempted.
He did a nice job of presenting a wide variety of views as well as inserting his own, but encouraging the listener to study it out.
Very much enjoyed this!

Born in an era of rising violence, Black Elk killed his first man at Little Big Horn, witnessed the death of his second cousin Crazy Horse, and traveled to Europe with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Upon his return, he was swept up in the traditionalist Ghost Dance movement and shaken by the massacre at Wounded Knee. But Black Elk was not a warrior, and instead chose the path of a healer and holy man, motivated by a powerful prophetic vision that haunted and inspired him.

Fascinating Story of a Complex Man
Revisado: 01-01-23
I enjoyed listening to this book because it helped increase my knowledge and understanding of who Black Elk was. I have heard of him for many years, in fact most of my life, but knew little about the man. Whether or not this book is the definitive biography of him, it still did a marvelous job of presenting the complexities that he represented.
it is obviously author has a great respect for Black Elk. having said that, I think he worked to be balanced in his presentation. I would definitely recommend this book.

Nicely Detailed Account of 2 Great Native Leaders
Revisado: 10-21-22
This book was definitely written with a Native slant to it. by the way, that is not a complaint. I believe the author also did a very good job of being balanced. The book provided great insight on what was going on among the Lakota people during this tragic time. It was a very good listen that I enjoyed very much! Highly recommended.

Historia
The Great Sioux War of 1876-77 began at daybreak on March 17, 1876, when Colonel Joseph J. Reynolds and six cavalry companies struck a village of Northern Cheyennes - Sioux allies - thereby propelling the Northern Plains tribes into war. The ensuing last stand of the Sioux against Anglo-American settlement of their homeland spanned some 18 months, playing out across more than 20 battle and skirmish sites and costing hundreds of lives on both sides and many millions of dollars. And it all began at Powder River.

Great Overview of a Disastrous Battle
Revisado: 09-24-22
gave a very good understanding and overview of the battle. the narration was a little halting and not up to the high standard I normally expect, but it's easy to criticize. I've never had to read something like that over a long period of time. highly recommend to listen to this if you're interested in the history of the Great Sioux Wars.

Historia
At the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon.

Historia
This remarkable book synthesizes a lifetime of in-depth research into one of America's most storied disasters, the defeat of Custer's 7th Cavalry at the hands of the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, as well as the complete annihilation of that part of the cavalry led by Custer himself. The author, Gordon Harper, spent countless hours on the battlefield itself as well as researching every iota of evidence of the fight from both sides, white and Indian. He was, thus, able to recreate every step of the battle as authoritatively as anyone could, dispelling myths and falsehoods along the way.
