The weak start for a new take.
Revisado: 01-04-22
I honestly find this to be by far the weakest book in the series so far. A lot of new characters, some really cool ones (I love the million and Tiger) but far to many characters that I can't help but feel are either needed to go with Jason to the other world, or have been an utter waste of time. I like that one character came with him to Earth, but on the other hand it does feel both like a cheap op-out for the author, so lets call that part "ok". I can't help but feel that Jason is too full of himself, with no real quality to redeem him from being plain wrong… I get that he felt betrayed by his brother and ex, and it is human to feel vendictive, but come on! What really holds this story back, is the utter lack of the other characters that I have come "love", those guys that actually makes Jason kept somewhat real... It is something of a sin to build up a series and then just discard the crew, so I take it that this is a "new" series, that likely will go on for two-three books, before we get back to the place where this series is strongest, with the characters that we actually care for. Oh and anti-US retroric is really annoying, if it was said with a wink and a joke, it would have been fine, but this book gets a bit too heavy on the nose on it. Finally this felt more like a story one had to read, to get to the good bits, but at this point I don't know if the author can deliver. Jason is way off balance (as a medium that is interesting to follow) because he is basically a god on earth, when it comes to his power level. That there are other stronger characters really doesn't feel like it, and that makes the story weak, with no real effect. What is a problem, is that the entire story and the main points, could with a brutal editor have been cut down to 8 chapters… That is a lot of dead space in this book. Overall it has its good parts, and there are parts I likely will visit again, but book 1-3 are significantly more entertaining than this one!

Historia
Sir Julian Stafford Corbett (1854-1922) was a prominent British naval historian and geostrategist whose works helped shape the Royal Navy's reforms of that era. Some Principles of Maritime Strategy (1918) is one of his most famous works. It covers the theory of war and the theory of naval war, and examines how England was able to prevent stronger navies from ever landing successfully or cutting supply routes between colonies in the empire. Corbett illustrates his insights with reference to the history of navies and naval battles.

One of the key works, but poorly read.
Revisado: 04-10-20
The content is among the most importent pieces of work on naval strategic thinking, and for that, everyone with even a small measure of interest in navies must read it, or in this case hear it. However Barker McLaurin clearly had to read it in a short time, because he misread a lot, thats a shame, but one can look past it, due to the content of the book.

Historia
Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War. Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes’ predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

a disapointment
Revisado: 02-27-20
This one left me really disapointed.
The premis of the story is really good, and the first few chapters are decent, the ship is clearly inspired by Battlestar Galactica, not a bad thing, and I got a bit more enthusiastic about the story.
However then the plot starts, and the the first troubles come.
First is the Sgt. whom we meet in the ship, first off it feels like her charcter was actually meant to be an officer, but the author thought it would be cool that she was a sgt. however the way she acts around one of the main charcters that outrangs her by quit a bit, is not really in line with her rank... This irretates, because had she been an officer like captain of the marines or even a lieutenant it would make far more sense, including the plot.
Second is the Captain, who comes off as pretty obssesive, particular towards facial hair... This is some OCD thing, because at no point does he offer a decent reason as to why he is so aginst facial hair... The Authour assumes the reader will just accept that this Captain wants to keep a high standart, but actual leaders gives a reason when they reprimant, so not to sound like a dick... Not here.
However where the book truely starts to fall apart, is the number of alien character that rather quickly becomes part of the story... They are very slopy covered, with next to no expelnation as to how they appear.
The plot tries to be a political drama as well as a space opera, not bad, but not particular well executed either.
In the end I gave up around half way in on the first book, because none of the charcters were particular interesting, nor were the plot good (up till that point).
A shame, because the general plot of the story is an interesting take, and something a better authour or editor could have fleshed out more.

In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

An intro to Hardcore history
Revisado: 11-20-19
Great book from Dan Carlin, he is a master at his field, and has turned out to be one of the great "history teachers" in recent time. This book is not a "heavy" history book, others will go into far more detail. But that is not against this book, instead this will make people that do not care about history, interested.
