In this inspirational and unflinchingly honest memoir, acclaimed author Reyna Grande describes her childhood torn between the United States and Mexico, and shines a light on the experiences, fears, and hopes of those who choose to make the harrowing journey across the border. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling...unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries.

Very sad, but wonderful story
Revisado: 08-05-21
The storytelling was 10/10 on this one, and it was good to learn about the human side of migration between the U.S./Mexico border. I loved the childhood stories, some were funny, some were sad, all were really entertaining and well told.

Useful tips for boundary setting
Revisado: 08-05-21
I have recommended this book for many friends and clients (I'm a therapist) because there are some excellent tips in the 2nd half of the book about how to set and keep boundaries with others. Even better, there are some exercises a person can do to tell if they need to set a boundary in the first place, which can be hard if you've grown up without that example being set. Even if you do not think your parents were problematic, it's a useful read to learn how to deal with challenging people in life.

Historia
We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Super interesting
Revisado: 08-05-21
This was interesting and also helped take away some of the mystery around this diagnosis. I'm a mental health professional and I feel that often we in the profession feel fear and misunderstand this diagnosis, it was interesting to hear of everyday people and how this may manifest. I have also enjoyed some of the takeaways about how people can set boundaries and live without undue fear in a world where others may not have their best interests at heart.

Great read
Revisado: 08-05-21
This book should be required reading for any person who is emotionally invested in their work. I appreciated that the author included people who do work like science as well as social workers like me, because we forget that burnout happens to other professions. Definitely went beyond the surface level types of advice such as engaging in self-care, and talked more about how burnout happens and what we can do at all levels to address it.

Halfway there?
Revisado: 08-05-21
I had to read this for a class I'm teaching, I would have stopped reading if it were not required. I struggled to complete the first 3/4 of the book because of the narrator's tone towards fellow human beings. It was honestly hard to get through some sections with such a hateful, derisive tone towards other patients in the institutions and the staff. I saw the narrator as exceptionally arrogant, and though the end of the book somewhat explained that attitude I still would not read anything else by this author. This book does show some good points about how our healthcare system works but it lacks hard facts to do back up the personal narrative really effectively. I wish it would have either been a heavily researched account on healthcare systems and evidence of how and why they operate how they do, or a full memoir on personal struggles with mental health, but it was neither. The end chapter essentially concludes that people don't get better unless they want to get better, which just re-emphasizes the idea that the narrator simply dislikes fellow human beings and doesn't have any insights on how mental health systems can be improved.

Historia
Since the dawn of the digital age, decision-making in finance, politics, health, and human services has undergone revolutionary change. Today, automated systems control which neighborhoods get policed, which families attain needed resources, and who is investigated for fraud. While we all live under this new regime of data, the most invasive and punitive systems are aimed at the poor. In Automating Inequality, Virginia Eubanks systematically investigates the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive risk models on poor and working-class people in America.

Great book, distracting narration
Revisado: 06-29-20
Read this book for a book club. Great data, lots of interesting talking points, and legitimate research. The narration was weird to the point of distraction. Narrator makes a forced voice when quoting anyone and it sounds wacky and sarcastic.
