Interesting but flawed.
Revisado: 08-12-23
Placing l the story in the late nineteenth century is ruined by the very conventional and crude dialog. How many “f-bombs” were required to tell this story really? There were so many places n these stories that seemed out of the character of the times that it destroyed my enjoyment of the narrative. I have no problem with 4 letter words but they seemed out of place here.

Rather shallow caricatures.
Revisado: 07-13-23
I got through this one by holding my nose and hoping it would get better. Th lead character, Dan, is a narcissistic rich boy. He’s just not that nice a person. I don’t care if he is successful at what he has done I his fictional life - he’s a jerk. Hard to care about what happens to him.

Historia
The US has abandoned its quest for the stars, and an old enemy has moved in to fill the void. The potential wealth of the universe is now in malevolent hands. Rebel billionaire Dan Randolph - possessor of the largest privately owned company in space - intends to weaken the stranglehold the new despotic masters of the solar system have on the lucrative ore industry. But when the mineral-rich asteroid he sets in orbit around the Earth is commandeered by the enemy, and his unarmed workers are slaughtered in cold blood, the course of Randolph’s life is changed forever.

What a disappointment. Couldn’t get through it.
Revisado: 07-13-23
The first book in this series was all right but this one is pitiful. Aside from being sadly outdated politically it’s also sadly outdated socially. The “Soviet Union” is the main set of bad guys. Of course, the USSR collapsed in real life. It makes the story seem that much more dated. Dan, the main character is disgusting. Super wealthy but so very shallow. He views women as possessions, entertainment for his desires but little else of value. He’s like a spoiled toddler but grown up and with lots of money. Reminds me somewhat of what I know about a current electric car and rocket manufacturing company owner.
I am quitting this book and will not bother with the remaining books in the series.

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

What a romp!

If you like absurdity and time travel, give this one a shot! The eccentricity of British society is played up and at times there a nearly Monty Python flavor to the story. Quite enjoyable!

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this story but was caught up in it pretty quickly. The writing was great, the characters were quirky - a good thing, and the story just convoluted enough to be interesting without it being hard to follow. I hope there is a follow on to this podcast because I’d really like to know what happens to the main characters.

In an alternate Renaissance Italy where the church regulates magic and licenses magicians, fiery Fiametta Beneforte wants to be more than her goldsmith-mage father's unpaid apprentice. A bit of sword and sorcery.

I’ve always enjoyed Bujold’s style. Although I’m not a big S&S fan, she tells a good story with her usual humorous phrasing and situations.

Historia
In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched sci fi into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution - or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging.

A little dated but still good.
Revisado: 12-17-22
I read this book several times as a teenager decades ago. It’s still an interesting concept although socially a little bit dated. The gestalt mind of the various characters works well as a concept. Some of the descriptions of various characters are cringeworthy but recalling that the book was written in 1953 I think we can let that slide.

Historia
Blackbriar Academy is an enchanted school on a magical island, and everyone wants in. It’s a home away from home for the most advanced mages in the world - and only the absolute best of the best are given an invitation. By some freak accident, I managed to get one. If I pass the trials, I get to stay. With nowhere else to go, Blackbriar is my one shot at having a real life, and I won’t let anyone take this from me. But there’s a catch. It turns out the people on this island are being trained to hunt the darkness - basically, they’re being trained to hunt me.

Hogwarts with Hormones.
Revisado: 10-28-22
Geez! This story was like Harry Potter and friends with raging hormones. The story needed some editing too. There were some bad grammar and awkward or incorrect word usages. Otherwise it was somewhat entertaining. The plot was a bit strange and had a lot of holes in it. But if you like romance novels with magic, you’d probably like this book.

Not my kind of story
Revisado: 10-12-22
The narrator did as good a job as could be with this material. The story was insipid. Eden, the main character, was a completely idiotic, stupid, hormonally driven mess. The story line was full of loose strings - plot details that were mentioned and should have been important but were never addressed again. Other parts were repeated and repeated and repeated. Then they were covered some more. I stayed with it just to see if it would be resolved but it left a lot on the table. I guess this is part one of a series.

Historia
Against the backdrop of worldwide, unexplainable natural disasters, Dr. Virginia Marilyn Edwards (Emmy Award-winner Kerry Washington) seeks out Agent Scott Thomas (Emmy Award-winner Laurence Fishburne) at a secretive government headquarters. Virginia claims these events are signs, and unless Agent Thomas helps her, she believes things will only get worse. Her desperation is dialed up higher with a shocking proclamation as she stands before him pregnant, weak, and weary: “Agent Thomas,” she says, “I believe I am Mary.”

What a disappointment
Revisado: 09-30-22
This audio play was pretty lousy. The acting was adequate but the writing was awkward and I didn't realize how "Christian" it was going to be. Even so, many other reviewers have said it didn't even get that part right. It also ended at a particularly weak moment. Even if there is a sequel, I won't be listening to it.
