Métis millennial Lucky St. James is barely hanging on when she learns she’ll be evicted from the tiny Toronto apartment she shares with her cantankerous but loving grandmother Stella. But then one night, something strange and irresistible calls out to Lucky. Exciting, involving, visual
Revisado: 02-16-17
I have been a fan of Roxanne Smolen for many years, and have read this book in print form. But I must admit that hearing it gave it a new dimension. Her books are excellently plotted, her characters multi-layered, her descriptions so real you can smell them. This book is no exception. It is a fast-paced ride through danger after danger, yet the young people of the Colonial Scouts manage to find their way past them. Ms. Fournier, the reader, has hit her stride here and gives an outstanding performance. Listening to the words allowed me to visualize the worlds Smolen has created more clearly and I enjoyed the experience. Highly recommended.

Didn't want to stop listening
Revisado: 09-09-16
This is listed as a young adult novel, but I (a 72-year-old) enjoyed it thoroughly. The story of Cody, whose life seems to be ruined when he discovers he's a werewolf at the age of sixteen, is full of twists and surprises, yet it flows smoothly. The action is fast-paced and the characters, including the minor ones of Grandpa Earl and Ef the jock, are well-rounded and believable. Cody and Brittany are sympathetic and realistic teenagers. Smolen makes their paranormal adventures seem real. Danny Randerson's reading is also excellent. He uses different accents, intonations and timbres to make the characters come to life. I started listening to it in my car and didn't want the drive to end because I'd have to pause the book until I got inside. Highly recommended.

Historia
The Colonial Scouts are an elite group of explorers who seek out habitable planets for the Colonial Expansion Board. They travel through space via programmable wormholes. Impani, a brilliant girl with a dark past, dreams of escaping the streets by becoming a Scout. Because she is homeless, she feels she must study twice as hard to get into the program. The day before her final exam, however, a transporter malfunction sends her jumping uncontrollably from planet to planet.

Fast-paced sci-fi
Revisado: 08-11-16
Smolen's story is rapid fire and her characters are believable and sympathetic. The descriptions are detailed enough so the listener can truly see them, but still give the imagination room to grow. Impani and Trace are teenagers who are intelligent and resourceful, but still are vulnerable in an appealing way. The concept of the impellic rings is fascinating, and the author gives enough of a grounding in science to make it believable. It is sci-fi at its best, and listening to it gives it an immediacy that I liked. I also like that I can take the book with me in the car or walking.
