This is not noir
Revisado: 01-07-24
I remember reading these books when I was younger, so I decided to give the series a listen. The story is much as I remember, but I found the choice of narrator a poor fit for this book because he read so quickly and I felt like I was somehow mistakenly listening to a noir detective book instead!

Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Let it surprise you!
Revisado: 03-27-21
For some reason I had this book on my To Read list, probably as a recommendation from a local bookstore. I didn't read the story summary before I listened to it, and that made this book so much better! One of the most strangely compelling and satisfying books I have encountered in a while. Just get this one and start listening! Excellent narration brings this odd, lovable tale to life...

A slow start, satisfying finish
Revisado: 10-21-16
As Dickens is wont to do, the beginning was a bit slow. I hung in there and was rewarded! Multitalented narration by Dickson.

Caveat emptor: Powerful book, subpar narration
Revisado: 03-04-11
Somehow I never read this book in high school or even college. I can't believe what I missed! If you haven't read this book, you should. But while the text of the book is a truly powerful work, this audio version of The Jungle has been ruined by the narrator: Casey Affleck's reading was exceedingly uninspiring. (I believe another reviewer used the word "underwhelming" which is a very apt description!) Please find a paper copy or another audio version and save yourself a credit.

Historia
"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

Worth a read, maybe not a listen
Revisado: 11-25-10
I was somewhat disappointed in this audiobook, mostly because of the voices chosen to narrate this novel. There was a huge disconnect for me between the readers and the characters they were portraying, and I probably would have been better off reading these stories instead.
That said, it was not King at his worst or his best. He excels at putting ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances (as the afterword states), and this collection was no exception! The pacing of each story was good for the most part, but sometimes the plot slowed, wandered off and got lost altogether. Out of the stories contained within this latest work, the ones that stood most out were "1922" and "A Good Marriage". Overall, worth a read, but maybe not a listen.
