Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

In this monumental and provocative history, Patrick Buchanan makes the case that, if not for the blunders of British statesmen - Winston Churchill first among them - the horrors of two world wars and the Holocaust might have been avoided and the British Empire might never have collapsed into ruins.

Excellent review of an “unknown” History
Revisado: 10-08-24
This was much better than I anticipated. It provides a much needed second look at the causes of the Great Wars and the possible paths that could have avoided both. Most importantly, Churchill is brought into focus and he doesn’t stand up well to the scrutiny.

15 min meditation & 53 min of annoying noise
Revisado: 07-03-24
This is a 15 minute mediation. The rest is some sort of synth preset Casio keyboard music on repeat. The positive reviews have absolutely got to be this guys friends or family. I would like to give no stars, and won't be listening to this ever again.

Historia
Julian the Apostate, nephew of Constantine the Great, was one of the brightest yet briefest lights in the history of the Roman Empire. A military genius on the level of Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great, a graceful and persuasive essayist, and a philosopher devoted to worshipping the gods of Hellenism, he became embroiled in a fierce intellectual war with Christianity that provoked his murder at the age of thirty-two, only four years into his brilliantly humane and compassionate reign.

Very entertaining novel with one flaw
Revisado: 06-23-24
This is such an interesting story, well told and the bonus of three narrators for the three “authors” makes this a very enjoyable listen. However Vidal chooses to not cover the military campaigns which I believe is a huge miss.
One of the most interesting things about Julian is how he came from basically a monastic life with no military training and became one of Rome’s most effective commanders. If militarily history in detail is not important to you, then you will surely enjoy this book. The descriptions of early Christianity and his efforts to turn back the clock are very interesting and often amusing.
I liked it quite a bit but as someone who really enjoys the strategic and tactical decisions that go into a campaign, I was left a bit wanting.

Historia
Here is one of the best historical novels ever written. Lame, stammering Claudius, once a major embarrassment to the imperial family and now emperor of Rome, writes an eyewitness account of the reign of the first four Caesars: the noble Augustus and his cunning wife, Livia; the reptilian Tiberius; the monstrous Caligula; and finally old Claudius himself. Filled with poisonings, betrayal, and shocking excesses, I Claudius is history that rivals the most exciting contemporary fiction.

Best Historical Fiction
Revisado: 05-10-24
Hesitate to call it fiction because the tale is probably true. Outstanding reader, as we know often the reader can make or break a book or just be neutral. In this case it was definitely a bonus, he captures the tone quite well.

Historia
The Roman empire was like no other. Stretching from the north of Britain to the Sahara, and from the Atlantic coast to the Euphrates, it imposed peace and prosperity on an unprecedented scale. Its only true rival lay in the east, where the Parthian and then Persian empires ruled over great cities and the trade routes to mysterious lands beyond. Tracing seven centuries of conflict between Rome and Persia, historian Adrian Goldsworthy shows how these two great powers evolved together

Great book ruined by an irritating reader
Revisado: 10-27-23
This hurts, I’m a huge fan of AG and believe he’s the best author on all things Roman.
But the reader for this book is just awful. Very hard to describe other than to say he sounds like a comedian doing an over the top fake British accent. The way he punches certain words and syllables is very distracting to me and made this a very difficult listen.
I normally enjoy British readers, in fact Simon Vance is probably my all time favorite. Perhaps others will not find this gentleman as grating as I do but I really hope AG changes readers going forward.
As for the book itself, as usual it is excellent.

Karen Russell’s comedic genius and mesmerizing talent for creating outlandish predicaments that uncannily mirror our inner in lives is on full display in these eight exuberant, arrestingly vivid, unforgettable stories. In “Bog Girl”, a revelatory story about first love, a young man falls in love with a 2,000-year-old girl that he’s extracted from a mass of peat in a Northern European bog. In “The Prospectors”, two opportunistic young women fleeing the depression strike out for new territory, and find themselves fighting for their lives. Plus much more.

Nope
Revisado: 07-03-23
I love a spooky, gothic, ghostie, night gallery-esque story but unfortunately this was not that. Even the excellent narrators couldn’t salvage the lousy writing. Some interesting ideas, but they never went anywhere. Plus not enough character development to even care about anyone if they had, so ultimately this book was boring & disappointing. For a great imaginative read I recommend Michael Mcdowells Blackwater instead.

Required reading to understand how we all got here
Revisado: 01-23-23
A chilling story of America’s dirty deeds and the evil men behind them. All of which led to the coup in Dallas in 1963 that forever changed the course of our government and which we are all still living under.
Because the bad guys won and all lived “happily ever after”, this not a book that will leave you with a good feeling but you will see world with a more discerning eye.

WORST thing I’ve listened to on audible
Revisado: 10-23-22
This book is one of the worst things I’ve ever listened to or read. This is quite a statement as I’ve loved all things books, audio books, libraries, what have you for my entire life!! It’s poorly written, intermittently pretentious, I couldn’t stand the main character and it just ends with zero resolution nor wrap up. Just a random slice of life from a spoiled, annoying, cloying, narcissistic woman. If I could do zero stars for this one I would’ve.

This book explores the dramatic difference between the Russian and US approach to warfare, which manifests itself across the whole spectrum of activities from art and the economy to the respective national cultures; illustrates the fact that Russian economic, military, and cultural realities and power are no longer what American "elites" think they are by addressing Russia's new and elevated capacities in the areas of traditional warfare, as well as cyberwarfare and space; and studies several ways in-depth in which the US can simply stumble into conflict with Russia and what must be done to avoid it.

Unfortunately this is a terrible book
Revisado: 05-10-22
I really wanted to like it, it seemed exactly what I was looking for…a look at American military power/history through an objective, non-American lense. I got the non-American part but the objectivity is out the window.
This is just a polemic on Soviet greatness disguised as a critique on American military doctrine. The author is very bright and knowledgeable but he just can’t hide his own bias.
The perfect example is his take on Vietnam where the US military never lost a meaningful battle. America lost Vietnam as a failure of its foreign policy coupled with handcuffing the Pentagon’s ability to fight the war properly. This exchange reported by
Gen. Frederick Weyland is perfect:
“You know, you never beat us on the battlefield,’ I told my North Vietnamese counterpart during negotiations in Hanoi a week before the fall of Saigon. He pondered that remark a moment and then replied, ‘That may be so, but it is also irrelevant.’”
Yet here the author attempts to frame it as a military defeat instead of aiming his criticism of the failure in the right directions, of which there are plenty.
Peppered throughout his critiques are references to how Russia does it better which seem fact free.
Long story short this book is not what it claims to be and will only appeal to those looking to extol Russian greatness
