Historia
David Hall, an American nuclear engineer, arrives in Israel on a mission of truth. Believing that the defenders of Masada killed themselves to protect a great secret, Hall plans to explore the heavily guarded site and discover the real reasons behind the dramatic end of the Roman siege. Hall is shadowed by an Israeli archaeologist, Judith Ressner, a reserved professor with an agenda of her own. There is more than history hidden within the mountain, and Hall soon finds himself the target of ferocious Israeli security forces.

Wonderful contemporary story
Revisado: 05-16-21
Two years ago I had my first trip outside the United States. I went to Israel with a friend of mine and spent ten days driving around the country. I spent an entire day up on Masada in that oven. As I listened to this story, I could see and feel in my minds eye that hot mountain top. Of course we only saw what was open to tourists but the author brought me back to that special place with this wonderful story.
I have listened to all this author’s war two naval stories. Mr. Deutermann is a top flight storyteller and I would highly recommend this and all his books.

Historia
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

A wonderful and powerful book.
Revisado: 09-16-18
I read this book when I was in my twenties. I am just turning 66 and wanted to hear it instead of reading it again. Much of the book I remembered, some of it I had forgotten. I found that the history was brought to life by the narrative, it seemed at times I was in Israel working on the dig or, God forbid, being a witness to the suffering of my ancestors. I have never traveled to Israel or Europe, but the author transported me to these places where I long to visit. This a wonderful book and the politics which is discussed throughout rings even truer today, but the God of Israel and his love for his people are eternal. On the narration, I almost stopped listening a few times because of the enunciation of the narrator. I'm sure he's a fine fellow and a professional but I'm just a plumber from Chicago who has never heard so many sentences snap and pop at their ends. Other than that, it was a joy to hear. Thank you.

Historia
Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, Defender of the Realm, the third volume of William Manchester’s The Last Lion, picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister - when his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill portrayed by Manchester and Reid is a man of indomitable courage, lightning-fast intellect, and an irresistible will to action.

A powerful history of a great man.
Revisado: 03-03-18
I have just finished the last volume of William Manchester's work on Winston Churchill. Years ago I have read Manchester's work on General McArthur "The American Caesar" and his memoir of his experiences as a young marine in the Pacific during WWII. I became a fan of Manchester's writing and this work did not disappoint. I have always been interested in Churchill, but now I'm an admirer of the great man. Thank you very much for filling out my drive times to and from work for last month or two. I highly recommend this work.

Historia
This second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors (at one point he had to put up his home for sale), he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles.

I love history and this book took me into history.
Revisado: 02-18-18
I have read William Manchester years ago, but I forgot how good of a writer and historian he is. I loved this book as well as the first in this series. I just downloaded book number three and am very much looking forward to hearing it. My only criticism of book two is the narrator of book one had Churchill's speaking pattern's and tempo down pat. The content and history was very good. Thank you very much.
