Historia
The American presidency is in trouble. It has become overburdened, misunderstood, almost impossible to do. “The problems in the job unfolded before Donald Trump was elected, and the challenges of governing today will confront his successors”, writes John Dickerson. After all, the founders never intended for our system of checks and balances to have one superior Chief Magistrate, with Congress demoted to “the little brother who can’t keep up”.

An even-handed take.
Revisado: 06-22-20
Far be it from me to insist on eating your vegetables in order to better yourself. And while there is plenty of opinions to go around, John Dickerson gets sets the tone correct in this book. By illuminating our history and how the presidency has evolved over the span of the lifetime of this great experiment, he gives perspective and a point of view that is lacking in 90% of the general media. I confess that I have enjoyed Dickerson's work for many years, but he really out does himself in the thoughtfulness and laying out the cause and effect of history. And it's interesting at the same time. Reading this book is one way to develop opinions based on facts and history, rather than self-confidence regardless of facts and social well being.

Historia
In 1900, an 18-year-old Spaniard named Pablo Picasso made his first trip to Paris. It was in this glittering capital of the international art world that, after suffering years of poverty and neglect, he emerged as the leader of a bohemian band of painters, sculptors, and poets. Fueled by opium and alcohol, inspired by raucous late-night conversations at the Lapin Agile cabaret, Picasso and his friends resolved to shake up the world.

An Excellent Text
Revisado: 04-04-19
This was a "page turner." So many Picasso bios gloss over this time (about the first 10 yrs of the 20th century) when it comes to his growth. These are the most important years as they show the making of his genius.
What Unger gets right most is the torment of creation. He includes the many relevant philosophies of creation and painting that existed in Paris at this time - all the while juxtaposed against the very real ideal of the art critic, gallerist and market place.
Highly recommend.

“Buy the ticket, take the ride,” was a favorite slogan of Hunter S. Thompson, and it pretty much defined both his work and his life. Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone showcases the roller-coaster of a career at the magazine that was his literary home.

Phil Gigante. Some narrators will do a good job - get you through the book easily enough. Gigante is an artist is the best sense of the word. It's like floating in Venice with a gondolier who can tell you the history, interesting and salacious stories and maybe that nugget of wisdom you needed.
I pop the speed up to 1.25x. it really makes it flow.

Historia
An iconic and controversial figure in American literature, Hunter S. Thompson displayed a brilliance that forever changed journalism. Thompson’s follow-up to The Proud Highway, this second volume of private, never-before-published letters spans the years 1968 through 1976. Addressed to such luminaries as Tom Wolfe, Kurt Vonnegut, and Jimmy Carter, this incisive collection showcases Thompson’s raw and starkly honest thoughts on a pivotal era in U.S. history.

Historia
History remembers Robert F. Kennedy as a racial healer, a tribune for the poor, and the last progressive knight of a bygone era of American politics. But Kennedy's enshrinement in the liberal pantheon was actually the final stage of a journey that had its beginnings in the conservative 1950s. In Bobby Kennedy, Larry Tye peels away layers of myth and misconception to paint a complete portrait of this singularly fascinating figure.

Historia
Traditionally, Robert F. Kennedy has been viewed as either the "Good Bobby", who saw wrong and tried to right it, or the "Bad Bobby" of countless conspiracy theories. Evan Thomas' achievement is to realize RFK as a human being, to bring to life an extraordinarily complex man who was at once kind and cruel, devious and honest, fearful and brave. The portrait that emerges is unvarnished but sympathetic, packed with new details about Kennedy's early life and his behind-the-scenes machinations.

Very comprehensive and psychological. Instead of putting a box around historical figure and illuminating what happened with in that box, Thomas weaves the characters in the culture of the time. Ray Porter is amazing. I’ll be sure to check out more books narrated by Can you call when you have a sec?

Edgar Hoover had created and was operating, in violation of the U.S. Constitution, his own shadow Bureau of Investigation.

This is a great book if you are familiar with the terms, practice and framework that goes into composing classical music. I am not. The book is too opaque for someone w/out any instruction in composition. The storyline of Beethoven's history is there, but it's hard to follow.

Historia
The presidential election of 1920 was among history's most dramatic. Six once-and-future presidents--Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt--jockeyed for the White House. With voters choosing between Wilson's League of Nations and Harding's front-porch isolationism, the 1920 election shaped modern America.

This was an amazing story that survives even though Pietrusza's disdain for anything Democratic colors the whole book.

He quotes the often repeated line that Woodrow Wilson knew how to hate, well, it is appropriate.
