Historia
Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Fun
Revisado: 10-31-23
I enjoyed joining Vera and Kal. There was something a bit unbelievable about their self-talk. It was fun overall. I recommend!

Historia
Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy, and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor, and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea's charitable work brings her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted by the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person's skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets one of the prisoners, the teenaged seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another strange idea.

Grit and lace
Revisado: 05-27-22
I enjoyed every word! Absorbing! Here is a story of horror that is believable and smart. I was fascinated throughout the story. Even though there is gore, I feel enriched by the genuine characters. The writing describes a lovely world of grit and lace. Highly recommend!

Historia
A kidnapper is at large; a schoolboy has disappeared. There are no leads, and no closure. The police have failed, and morale at Lafferton Station has collapsed. Then DCI Simon Serrailler receives a call: a child has been snatched in Yorkshire. Has the abductor struck again? The Risk of Darkness picks up where The Pure in Heart left off. It is set in a world in which a widowed husband's crazy grief turns to obsession and violence, and women - both old and young - feel threatened.

Now I'm hooked
Revisado: 10-02-21
I too started this audio and stopped to check the start of the previous one, The Pure In Heart. I'm not used to a mystery series having a case continue so prominently into the next book. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. It's the best one so far in the series. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Cats benefit too!
Revisado: 04-25-21
What? What does this recording have to do with cats?
I adopted two adult rescue cats a few months ago. I was told that they were hard to adopt from their foster mom because both are hypersensative. One of them, Max, was about to go to a barn sanctuary. He would not let his foster mom get closer than three feet for the two years that she had him. I adopted him with this understanding and so far I was experiencing the same. I've studied developmental trauma from childhood in adult humans for over a decade. I recognize that these cats developed in a state of guarding.
I listened to this two hour audio. I followed the guided meditation sitting on the floor. I noticed Max enter the room. I felt an urge to yawn and noticed that Max and I were yawning at the same time. Thought this was cool. I closed my eyes again and when I opened them, Max was laying behind me a few feet away. This is so far as close as he will come to me or let me get to him. I finished the book and felt both expansive and inspired. I've taken meditation courses and meditated on my own for twenty years. I greatly appreciated how Jon framed the importance of consistency and not needing to enjoy every moment of the meditations.
Later, I was sitting on the couch streaming a show when I noticed the two cats curled up next to me on a blanket on the floor within arms reach. Max was the closest to me and both were looking at me. I said something to them and the other one started purring loudly and kneading the blanket. This was new. Max softened his eyes and half closed them. This was new too. I reached out to Max and his eyes stayed soft. I petted him for two minutes. WHAT? I give full credit to how this meditation effected me AND these two sensitive beings. WOW! I knew I felt more relaxed and felt less emotional pain in my chest that is chronic, but the cats' comfort around me was even more obvious evidence of the power of meditation. This was a miraculous demonstration of how our systems sync with those around us. This book is a masterpiece!

Even Better!
Revisado: 08-19-16
I don't feel the desire to re-listen to a book very often, but I did with this one. I enjoyed Imogen's version of Helen. Delicious! I caught myself from time to time repeating out loud phrases. This audio book is like a quirky best friend! Enjoy!
