Historia
When young orphan, Oliver Twist, is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker, he leaves behind years of miserable servitude and mistreatment at an English workhouse. Hoping to move on to better things, he decides to escape his new, equally dreary surroundings and head to London. It is there that the novel unravels as Oliver meets a host of larger-than-life characters, including The Artful Dodger, a high-ranking member of a juvenile pickpocketing gang, and their elderly leader, Fagin.

The narration could have been satisfying… However.
Revisado: 07-08-24
The narration could have been very satisfying. Simply reading this Dickens novel would have been wonderful, because the narrator, Jonathan Price, a great actor, has an excellent voice. However, like far too many narrators, he was directed to force a “characterization” on each of the individuals. In each voice there emitted the same shrill voice, the voice of an individual in the throes of passing painful kidney stones. Novels were written as novels, they were written to be read as one reads any novel, not to be performed like a hapless vaudeville stage comedy… Jonathan shame on you. Perhaps visit an urologist.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

The overall story is good . . . But the narration.
Revisado: 01-05-24
The overall story is good . . . But the narration is badly disrupted by the narrator imitating the accents of the various members of Shackleton’s crew. I found this habit very annoying. Subsequently, I found this purchase to be a waste of one credit.

Neil Hansen began his aviation career as a pilot for Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. He spent more than a decade in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War as a captain for Air America, the CIA's airline that operated there during the Vietnam era and the Secret War in Laos. Neil reveled in the risky flying that fed his adrenaline addiction. Upon returning to the States, ultimately unable to find work and unable to let go of the Air America exhilaration rush, he saw the profession he loved come to an end when his trajectory veered off course.

A reaonaby good story
Revisado: 01-16-23
The overall story is fairly good, but I’m wondering about this writer’s ethics. In chapter 14 he recounts with glee advising a pilot to vacation in Africa, but purposely sending the poor man on an arduous nightmare. And again he did the same, sending newlyweds to an agonizing trip to India. The writer seems to luxuriate in describing his rather pointlessly spiteful sense of humor for no purpose.

Revisado: 11-21-22
Robert Garland is a Superb Narrator of his book - of all his books. As we listen, we pierce the general fog of all the disparate facts to which we’ve been a passing audience through our lives through grade school, high school, and college. A terrific historian and narrator.

A wonderfully narrated classic.
Revisado: 10-30-22
One of the very few Audible English classic novels intelligently narrated. The narration of this Jane Eyre is unmarked by the foolish approximations of “voicing” marring most of the Audible recordings. Audible renders most classics, British, American, European, or otherwise, with a myriad of absurd, miserable accents. Audible has forgotten that each author of the many classics was intended to be read, not play-acted, as though on stage. These fine classics should be read and only read by each narrator. Not acted with characterizations of each character’s supposed accent, most of which are ruined by narrators who sound like they are passing kidney stones. But they don’t learn, do they . . .

In this amazing audiobook, Hans Holzer, renowned psychic investigator and ghost hunter, now turns his sights on another kind of game. On beings from beyond our galaxy. They say they are here to warn us and help us not to destroy ourselves. Could they have some other purpose in mind? Why are they really here? The Ufonauts presents overwhelming evidence for the fact that they are studying our life forms and taking specimens of plants and animals. And people.

An Absurdly Overblown Analysis

The subject topic has always been fascinating. Yet, this writer has an overblown, wordy style - his intention is to fill page after page with words well beyond their need. A waste of time. A bloated piece of garbage.

At the dawn of the 21st century, China has emerged as the "factory floor" for global production, providing the world with cheap goods at low prices. However, there is a very steep price to pay for these low-budget consumables - a price that very well may have dire consequences for the health and security of the planet. In this eye-opening series of lectures, business professor and best-selling author Peter Navarro dissects the coming China wars and their implications for all mankind.

As he bears witness to his children’s suffering, Gradgrind is forced to confront the dangers of his dispassionate, utilitarian philosophy.

The culture of redefining the authors original work through excessive narrator interpretation is again at play here and in too many novels narrated these days. It is for the reader to make such interpretation - not the narrater.

A Genuine Narration of Determination and Loss
Revisado: 05-16-22
Ryan O'Neal has narrated his story of family, determination, and loss. He survives the loss of his first and “third” wife. His determination to be a husband and father to his four children and loss of his third wife, Farrah Fawcett, through cancer is narrated with genuine feeling. Mr. O’Neal has done an excellent narration. We feel his exhaustion through the addictions of his children and his grief missing the life he lived with Farrah Fawcett. “Rest after toil; Death after life,” Joseph Conrad.
