True western, with grit and action, but intellect
Revisado: 09-24-13
Where does Riders of the Purple Sage rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very high, marvelous story and a wonderful narration
Who was your favorite character and why?
Lassiter. his total change as a character made him come alive, he was not just some unchanging and unrealistic man often pictured as a western stereotype.
Which scene was your favorite?
Tull's chase against our heros
Who was the most memorable character of Riders of the Purple Sage and why?
Elder Tull. A terrifying, tortuous, and power mad church leader. He exemplified the errors in the first generation of Mormons in Utah and also is a symbol of those men who with 'invisible hands' control things for their own will. A connection to someone like Richelieu is inevitable.

Historia
No leader of modern times was more uniquely patriotic than Charles de Gaulle. As founder and first president of the Fifth Republic, General de Gaulle saw himself as "carrying France on [his] shoulders." In his 20s, he fought for France in the trenches and at the epic battle of Verdun. In the 1930s, he waged a lonely battle to enable France to better resist Hitler's Germany. Thereafter, he twice rescued the nation from defeat and decline by extraordinary displays of leadership, political acumen, daring, and bluff, heading off civil war and leaving a heritage adopted by his successors of right and left.

The unsure man hidden in the statue of granite
Revisado: 09-24-13
Would you listen to The General again? Why?
No, at least not any time soon; not that it is bad, but it is not the kind of thing to listen to over and over
What did you like best about this story?
The story and stories behind and concerning de Gaulle, not being French I never totally understood all the fuss they make about him. I understand now. His life was a truly fascinating one; an intellect, romantic, power hungry, monarchical, aristocratic, fearless, yet democratic Frenchman (more than anyone else in history, one could argue) to his nation, but a troubled, self-questioning, and insecure man to himself. What he did is remarkable, what he could not because of the people he so loved is also just as profound. he was a man who stood up to bigger nations, who never gave in, and could only have it his way. And though he was unrealistic, he was made not into a clown, but into a hero. Standing up to ones principles, even if they are said to be wrong, is the lesson of Charles De Gaulle. There is no attitude of character more important, more fundamental. Charles Du Gaulle's victories and his defeats are truly profound and stirring.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No by god! That would require more than one whole day

Silly, Lofty, and Unrealistic
Revisado: 11-27-12
Would you try another book from Zora Neale Hurston and/or Ruby Dee?
No. Hurston's style is irritating and often confounding. The actions of her characters are completely illogical in most cases and they way she has them talk is correct (accents), but intolerable to listen to. Dee's performance, although impassioned, is highly irregular, often to loud then to soft, often to fast then to slow, and somethings completely incomprehensible.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Impassioned, but rubbish. Or... ambitious, but rubbish! As one Jeremy Clarkson would say.
What didn’t you like about Ruby Dee’s performance?
See first question
Could you see Their Eyes Were Watching God being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, it would be boring and stupid.
