Historia
When Chen’s parents are incinerated before his eyes by a blast of ball lightning, he devotes his life to cracking the secret of the mysterious natural phenomenon. His search takes him to stormy mountaintops, an experimental military weapons lab, and an old Soviet science station. The more he learns, the more he comes to realize that ball lightning is just the tip of a new frontier in particle physics. Although Chen’s quest provides a purpose for his life, his reasons for chasing his elusive quarry come into conflict with soldiers and scientists who have motives of their own.

Great smart story!
Revisado: 08-23-24
Dislike - introduction where Liu’s name was totally butchered in pronunciation. I got past it!
Likes - the cultural aspects, the science, the characters, and the plot twists I didn’t anticipate.

Historia
On the evening of June 27, 1918, the Llandovery Castle—an unarmed, clearly marked hospital ship used by the Canadian military—was torpedoed off the Irish Coast by U-Boat 86, a German submarine. Sinking hospital ships violated international law. To conceal his actions, the U-86 commander had the submarine deck guns fire on survivors. One lifeboat escaped with witnesses to the atrocity. Global outrage over the attack ensued.

Learned about a mostly forgotten important history
Revisado: 08-12-24
I knew the broad strokes of the sinking, but many details were misrepresented. It was enjoyable to learn the true details of the sinking.
I was not aware of the legal precedents that were established and how they are part of international law today.
The story has several repetitive parts, but overall it is a worthy investment in time to listen to.

Constantin Valdor. It is a name that brings forth images of heroism, honour and peerless duty. For it is he who commands the will of the Legio Custodes that most esteemed and dedicated cadre of elite warriors. He is the Emperor’s sword, His shield, His banner and he knows no equal. Clad in shining auramite, his fist clenched around the haft of his Guardian Spear, he is the bulwark against all enemies of the throne, within or without. Nearing the end of the wars of Unity, Valdor’s courage and purpose is put to the test as never before.

Basic and not worthy of my time.
Revisado: 07-09-24
Reader was great and that was the best part of this book.
The story was basic and predictable. I knew nothing about this “universe” and it was recommended by my teenage son.
My recommendation to him and you, listen to the Dune books in order or the Foundation series for a superior story and future of humanity. This was good for a teenager but there is better literature out there.

Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

I learned so much! Excellent performance!
Revisado: 05-27-24
I presume like many, I know about battles and key figures. This book focuses on the preamble, which was much more complex in failures of leadership than I had thought.
Many key people I’d never heard of. Excerpts from diaries and letters take the listener back to understand what they were actually thinking.

Historia
The greatest of all Civil War campaigns, Gettysburg was the turning point of the turning point in our nation’s history. Volumes have been written about this momentous three-day battle, but recent histories have tended to focus on the particulars rather than the big picture: on the generals or on single days of battle—even on single charges—or on the daily lives of the soldiers. In Gettysburg Sears tells the whole story in a single volume.

Great listen. I learned so much!
Revisado: 05-22-24
I chose this Gettysburg book based on reviews and that it was not too long. I’m glad I did.
Too many characters to keep all in my mind, but I loved the preamble for both North and South, challenges and failures for both in leadership, logistics and technology, and the aftermath well explained.
I just wish I’d had time to listen to it all before hiking around Gettysburg and the battlefield.

Golan Trevize, former councilman of the First Foundation, has chosen the future, and it is Gaia. A superorganism, Gaia is a holistic planet with a common consciousness so intensely united that every dewdrop, every pebble, every being, can speak for all - and feel for all. It is a realm in which privacy is not only undesirable, it is incomprehensible. But is it the right choice for the destiny of mankind? While Trevize feels it is, that is not enough. He must know.

Historia
In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than 200 Texians who had been trapped in the Alamo. After 13 days of fighting, American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. It was a crushing blow to Texas' fight for freedom. But the story doesn’t end there. The defeat galvanized the Texian settlers, and under General Sam Houston’s leadership, they rallied. Six weeks after the Alamo, Houston and his band of settlers defeated Santa Anna’s army in a shocking victory.
