Historia
In 1985 southern Sudan is ravaged by war. Rebels and government forces battle for control, with ordinary people…people like the boy, Salva Dut…caught in the middle. When Salva's village is attacked, he must embark on a harrowing journey that will propel him through horror and heartbreak, across a harsh desert, and into a strange new life. Years later, in contemporary South Sudan, a girl named Nya must walk eight hours a day to fetch water. The walk is grueling, but there is unexpected hope.

The story starts out slowly & my audio skipped around so I had to go back & find my place several times. Finally I just sat and listened to avoid the jumping. I didn’t understand the correlation between the parallel stories for quite some time & on the audio, the chapters were nearly all labeled the same. With the erratic jumping & similar names it was a strange audible book. Also, the male narrator was soothing & plausible. In contrast, the female narrator was annoyingly crisp in her American diction, leaving no question on enunciation but also making it difficult for her to sound authentic. Very distracting! I loved the story & will seek out more info as I was left yearning for more info on this water project.

Historia
Welcome to 97-hour weeks. Welcome to life and death decisions. Welcome to a constant tsunami of bodily fluids. Welcome to earning less than the hospital parking meter. Wave goodbye to your friends and relationships. Welcome to the life of a first-year doctor. Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights, and missed weekends, comedian and former medical resident Adam Kay’s This Is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the front lines of medicine.

Very Funny

Honest & funny this book made me LOL often. It also highlights the pitfalls of healthcare in a free market (US) as well as social systems (UK). After endless brutal years of work and scathing sarcasm, the book ends rather abruptly. The epilogue has a strange feel. It talks about doctors, income, politics, and sacrifice. Unfortunately, Kay complains but falls woefully short in his responsibility to allow socialized medicine to own its innate shortcomings.
