I have been a fan of the mountain man story since childhood, and Rinella really does a good job of bringing this story to life with descriptions that put the listener in the mountains with these men. I would have given this book five stars all around except for the fact that Rinella goes into extreme detail on beaver-hat making which I found too lengthy. I also felt Rinella could have told more of the adventure stories about the mountain men. He only briefly mentions Kit Carson, doesn't mention the real Jeremiah Johnson though he references the movie inspired by this real person several times. This is a really good introduction to the mountain man and his life and times but I hope it inspires people to dig a little deeper because there is so much more to it than Rinella could include in one book.

I really had known next to nothing about the Golden State Killer prior to listening to this book. It was a fascinating but disturbing story to say the least. Amazing the amount of time and energy Michelle put into this and very sad that she did not live to see it's completion or see him caught. My only knock against this is because of her untimely death much of the book was put together by colleagues and friends and the frequent asides can be distracting. overall would recommend.

The definitive story of the Manson trial

I loved this story because it was so detailed and told from the perspective of the lead prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi. I thought I knew something about these heinous crimes but I learned much, much, more than I ever knew. If I have one very minor criticism it is that I feel the author spent a little too much time trying to explain Manson's appeal to those who joined his "family", and his continued appeal to certain segments of society today. I don't know, without having a deep knowledge of psychology if it is possible to understand Manson and his accolytes. The thing I most appreciated is that the author did not shy away from condemning these acts and those who participated in them in the harshest of terms. A classic for a reason.

Perhaps I just don't understand the importance of this book in history but I do know it is highly recommended by very intelligent people so take what I say for what it is, a layman's review. First, I will say that there is much in this book about right living, kindness, forbearance, gratitude, etc. that we could all apply to our lives but my biggest issues are 1) He is repeating himself over and over again with regard to accepting our natures and the natural order of the world. He may say it slightly differently in places but the meaning is the same. 2) His Stoic philosophy seems to suggest that we should embrace whatever fate befalls us and not be troubled by the hardships of life. Far easier said than done 3) This was written over 1,800 years ago. The language, although translated to English makes many concepts hard to grasp and the frequent references to Greek and Roman persons who must have been famous in their days are lost I think on most readers unless they are well acquainted with Greek and Roman history. I think there are more contemporary books that make these same points in a clearer, more relatable manner.

It is hard to believe that Anton Treuer has never written fiction before because this is a moving story filled with humor, adventure, sadness, hope, and most importantly, love. The characters are well crafted and you come to care deeply for them as the story progresses. The characters of Emma and Liam share a beautiful love story and Liam is as funny a character as I have seen in fiction in a long, long time. This might be a young readers book but it moved this 54 year old man to tears and made me laugh out loud as well. This is a very authentic story as well because there may be no one who knows more about Ojibwe culture than Treuer. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and hearing the author speaking Ojibwe through his characters adds to the work. This would be a fantastic addition to any library or classroom and I, for one, hope the author is just getting started.

Like Seabiscuit, this story about underdogs rising to become superstars is moving, dramatic, heartbreaking at times but ultimately uplifting and triumphant. The characters come alive, especially Joe Rance and you feel the pain of the Great Depression on him especially. You feel the looming threat of the Nazis and see the hypocrisy evident in their manipulation of the 1936 Olympics. phenomenal story and so much better than the film.

As someone who is trying to learn about the richness and history of Ojibwe culture I found this to be a powerful, painful, yet ultimately uplifting look into a culture that has existed centuries before Europeans landed on these shores. The characters ring true, the heroine is believable and I came to love her by the end for her courage, compassion, and love for her people. It's also a great mystery story. I love that I was educated as well as entertained. Highly recommend.

James Vukelich Kaagegabow narrates this work so well that it will move the listener to think deeply about the universal truths. While the author is Ojibwe and the Seven Grandfather Teachings are Ojibwe these are universal truths. I was moved by the Ojibwe recognition that we are related to the natural world, and in a very real sense we are. Science seems to be proving more and more what the Ojibwe knew centuries ago, that we cannot survive if we don't care for Mother Earth and all of our relatives. When we stop seeing the natural world as something to be exploited for our benefit and recognize our connection with the natural world we will treat the Earth and one another with compassion. This is a great book on how to live a good life whether you are Native or not. Miigwech, Kaagegabow.

This is a compelling story about one of the most famous Indian chiefs in US history who also happened to be of mixed heritage. Like all stories of the US and the First People this ends tragically for the Natives, but Quannah Parker does his best to survive and thrive in a very rapidly changing world.

Just a phenomenal story, one of those books that is so much better as an audible where you get to hear the language, the accents, it just comes alive. What a woman Trevor's mother is and what a beautiful tribute to her.
