Historia
1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later, the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something. When Grace Carrow, an Oxford physicist, unwittingly interferes, Thaniel is torn between opposing loyalties.

Not perfect but captivating
Revisado: 04-28-25
Clockwork and clairvoyance. Suspend disbelief on both. Atmospheric period piece. Worth trying. Not exactly the steampunk I'd thought it would be. A bit weird. Seems to break some storytelling protocols - a bit of an "oh so that's it?" ending.

Historia
A winter weekend ends in snowbound disaster in a novel which remains a favourite among Marsh readers. It began as an entertainment: eight people, many of them enemies, gathered for a winter weekend by a host with a love for theatre. They would be the characters in a drama that he would devise. It ended in snowbound disaster. Everyone had an alibi - and most had motives as well. But Chief Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn, when he finally arrived, knew it all hung on Thomas, the dancing footman....

Dated - not really suited to a modern audience
Revisado: 04-02-25
Tedious. Just awful. Yes it's a period piece but the story telling is glacially paced with ridiculously antiquated dialog. The narrator is a caricature of Noel Coward Wilde. One presumes the he's holding cigarette holder throughout. "I simply must write a play about that daaahling".

Historia
Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Excellent but needs editing down
Revisado: 11-02-23
Oppenheimer did not invent the atom bomb. This gives a fuller history. Who has heard of Szilard? Great minds like Fermi and Bohr made some very bad assessments. If you like obscure detail you'll love this book. Otherwise it needs editing down to give it better pace. We do not really need to know how many times a letter was written, how many versions kept and and which train it was carried to Washington. What really is enlightening is how Sachs, a non-scientist, delivered the gist of the letter to Roosevelt. The "Einstein letter" would have been an unintelligible read and its time critical message might have been missed.
In summary - some real gems but you have to stick with it.

Historia
In Carrying the Fire, Michael Collins conveys, in a very personal way, the drama, beauty, and humor of the adventure of reaching the moon. He also traces his development from his first flight experiences in the air force, through his days as a test pilot, to his Apollo 11 spacewalk, presenting an evocative description of the joys of flight as well as a new perspective on time, light, and movement from someone who has seen the fragile Earth from the other side of the moon.

Good in parts
Revisado: 08-07-23
Good pace and feeling of technical credibility initially. I thought this was going to be a real winner. Then suddenly the plot veered into the implausibly far-fetched. I mean we're messing around near a Russian spacecraft then it's "Get back in in 30 seconds we're blasting off for the moon!". Sorry having listened to exciting non-fiction accounts of Apollos 11 and 13 this is too "comic book". It's a shame - I was disappointed. Maybe I'm allowing implausibility to get in the way. I was expecting more Apollo 13 and got Moonraker.
