Historia
Calamity is confronting two big transitions: the death of her beloved father and the beginning of menopause, a physical shift that has rekindled her gift for finding lost things. Suddenly, she is getting hot flashes that seem to forge objects out of thin air, most notably a four-year old boy. As Calamity takes the child into her care, she discovers that all is not as it seems. Then, Calamity must reawaken to the mysteries surrounding her own childhood and the early disappearance of her mother.

Great Story!
Revisado: 05-01-22
I really enjoyed this story. I loved the mermaid aspect and the main character was flawed but had her good qualities. She was so realistic. There were just enough characters to keep it interesting but not too many that you couldn’t keep up with everyone.

Captivating Story!
Revisado: 04-11-21
This story had elements of a dystopian society, a caste system, and a lot of political intrigue. I kept forgetting the characters were teens. It wasn’t the typical love triangle you see in most YA novels and I greatly appreciated that.
It’s starts off a tad slow, but that’s because the world building is taking place and it allows the reader the opportunity to get to know our main character Darrow and makes us committed to him and his cause. Rest assured the story picks up! And when it does it is non stop action and you will be on the edge of your seat.
I loved the character growth for many of the main characters especially Darrow. It was very organic. I liked getting glimpses into the other Color Castes.
I would recommend this to young teens to adults. It has some profanity but honestly, kids hear and see worse on Social Media alone. The profanity was NOT an issue for me.
I cannot wait to listen to the next book in this series and wonder why it took me so long to find it!

Mary B. Addison killed a baby. Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary, and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

Great story!
Revisado: 10-08-17
Omg! First of all, the narrator for the audible book, Bahni Turpin is AH-MAZING! She changed her voice for each character. You knew who was talking every time. There were a couple of solid plot twists. The whole story is very intriguing and kept me interested from beginning to end. The ending was nothing how I thought it would be and that was okay because it worked. I don’t want to give anything away. Just trust me and read/listen to it!
I would love to see more from this author and I would DEFINITELY listen to more audible books read by Bahni.

Historia
Aged Mother Jilo is wise in the ways of magic...but once upon a time, she was just a girl. 1950s Georgia: King Cotton has fallen. Savannah is known as the "beautiful woman with a dirty face," its stately elegance faded by neglect, its soul withering from racial injustice and political corruption. Young Jilo - fiercely independent, intelligent, and ambitious, but thwarted by Savannah's maddeningly genteel version of bigotry - finds herself forced to embrace a dark power that has pursued her family for generations, an ancient magic that may prove her salvation.

I hope this will be a stand alone series.
Revisado: 05-29-16
Mother Jilo was my favorite character from The Savannah Witching Series. I loved how this book started with Jilo's great Grandmom on down to her with how they got involved in hoodoo.
My only issue was I was finding it really hard to reconcile this Jilo with the Mother Jilo in the series. They didn't connect. Also, in the series, Mother Jilo is always being accused by the witches of "stealing magic" but in this book, that is not how I perceived it. She didn't "steal" the magic. If anything her and countless women in her family before her were always manipulated to take in the magic even though they really didn't want to. Just because they weren't born witches didn't mean they had no rights to magic.
The ending felt a tad rushed. I feel like Jilo could've been part of a stand alone series and then the ending could've reconciled better in a second book.
Overall I still loved it. I loved the historical accuracies, the culture and the details. I could imagine everything in my mind with no problem. The audible reader was pretty good too. I would definitely recommend you read this book if Mother Jilo interested you at all from the series.
