I give up!

I was trying to enjoy this story, but the narrator who plays Giula is soooooo bad that I'm giving up. She takes all the joy out of listening. She pauses after every third word, puts emphasis on the wrong part of the word, sing-songs words in a non-sensical manner, and generally sounds like she has no idea what she is saying. I thought the story was good, but have been reading here that the ending is very weak. Guess I'll just give up.

It has been a long time since a book has brought me to tears. This one did. So beautifully written, and so realistic at the same time. Highly recommend

Best reader ever!

Grover Gardner brings to life every book he reads. I bought this book, not knowing much about it, because he was the reader. The story itself is a wonderful, well-written homage to a family living in Georgia in the early 1900’s. I highly recommend it.

Horrible reader! Old book.

Don't be fooled. Your love for Bujold books will be sorely tested by this story. This book was written in 1993, and has only recently been released by Audible. The reader is horrible! She constantly puts the emphasis on the wrong word in a sentence, which makes the story harder to understand. Even worse, is her habit of pausing in weird places: "....the light shining through....(pause)...the window. I tried to continue listening, because I've listened to and enjoyed every Bujold book on Audible, but I just had to quit. The topper was when my husband, who did finish the book, said the story was awful, too. Don't waste a credit.

Warning: watch your driving!

I found the biggest problem with this book was that the descriptions were so good that I would visualize what was happening in the book and get lost in the story, forgetting that I needed to pay more attention to my driving. I'm of the (ahem) older generation, but having lived through the 80's with our two sons, I found the references to the games, movies, and computer evolution of that decade to be fascinating, as well as nostalgic. The story moves along at a good pace. There's just the right amount of romance and suspense. And the reader is terrific.

Another wonderful book in the Miles Vorkosigan series. The main problem is, it ended too quickly. Is there another book in the series? If so, please acquire it. If not, please convince Bujold to write another. My husband and I have both enjoyed every book in this series!

Lacking

Although somewhat enjoyable, I had to keep checking to see that this book was not abridged. It left out so much in the way of setting, character development, and emotion that it read like an abridged novel. The characters are more like characatures of people of the times, with little depth. The reader was also lacking in depth. Some of his character adaptations were quite good. But most of his sentences ended on an upward note, lacking proper intonation. I don't think I'll be ordering any more books by this reader or author.

What a disappointment!

I gave up on this book after three hours. The author spent so much time confusing the reader with previous characters and events that the story barely moved forward. But even then, I might have continued on if it hadn't been for the terrible narrators. They have been well vilified by other reviewers, so I will only add that they were terrible.

Don't Kiss Them Good-Bye

It's time someone thought to discourage some authors from reading their own books. There is a reason there are professional readers. I didn't buy this book because, listening to the sample, I knew I would not be able to listen to the reader's voice for a long period of time. The material itself sounded interesting. Please re-issue it with a different reader!
