Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

One of the best.
Revisado: 03-06-21
This is one of the best Great Courses out there. Not only is he an expert on Egypt, he is an expert in how to tell Egypt's story. You will definitely not be disappointed. His presentation is just fascinating. I actually got a chance to see the pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, and the experience was so enriched by having listened to this. I can't recommend highly enough.

Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

Started off better than it ended.
Revisado: 03-06-21
This was an ok story. I agree with the reviewer who pointed out the disconnect between the main character telling the story and who the character is supposed to be. Unlike that reviewer, it didn't bother me enough to quit listening.. The story starts off strong, you get halfway through the book, and it feels like the story is coming to a satisfying end. The author then takes you on a long series of twists that are supposed to be shocking. Like Israelites through the Sinai, you wander for forty years through these twists, and it just gets cheesier as it goes. In the end, like the Israelites, you wind up where you thought you would from the beginning. I did listen to it til the end, and as a whole it wasn't terrible. I won't be buying the second book in the series, however, and I don't recommend using a credit on this one.

When three-month-old Lia Lee arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos.

good but a lot of mispronounciations
Revisado: 10-13-19
This book is really, really good, and the reader's style is generally good. The problem is that she mispronounces a *lot* of common words to the point that it's very distracting. Sometimes she takes words and makes them another word altogether, such as the time I kept wondering why the patients would be indignant. Until I realized they were indigent. This happens so frequently that I questioned if any editor or anybody else involved in the process had listened to this at all. Now, normally this would cause me not to be able to listen to the book. However, the book itself is so good that I actually do recommend it, even in the audio form. You learn so much about the history and culture of the Hmong, You get the point of view of doctors trying to treat a patient whom they can't communicate with. The story is one of a lot of people, all trying to do the right thing, who wind up in seemingly antagonistic positions. Despite the issues with the reader, I loved this book, and suggest you give it a try.

Historia
In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls". While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying chapters in modern American history.

Very Interesting
Revisado: 07-18-18
This book was very interesting! I was worried about the narration because other people had complained but it was just fine. I appreciated the fact that it was her own story she was telling. It kept my attention through the whole book and I always looked forward to listening to it. I'm glad she decided to tell her story and I'm glad I chose to listen to it.

Narrator drove me nuts
Revisado: 05-15-18
I couldn't get past the narrator. Some of the time he was good! But the way he prounounced certain words for certain characters finally annoyed me so bad I had to stop listening. I heard him prounounce "drink" as "tink" or "dink" or "deenk" for the millionth time and I just couldn't take it anymore. I'll read this one.

As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Dull
Revisado: 10-17-15
Any additional comments?
The author pretty much writes an outline of dates and events and reads down the outline. You have to force yourself to pay attention to it. A good history teacher knows how to tell a story and this is completely lacking. It's like being ready to be served a delicious cake and the chef just comes out and reads you the recipe. The subject itself is something I would be very interested in hearing about but I will look for some other source. I listen to a lot of history courses and this is one of my least favorites. I didn't even finish it and that's very unusual.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

Any additional comments?
This book is simply a must-read. Or listen. Like a lot of others I had read the book. I remembered liking it. It had been a while and I had forgotten some details, so I decided to give listening to it a try. I'm very glad I did. It has probably been my favorite book to listen to, and I have listened to quite a few. Anthony Heald does a masterful job reading this. I will look for some of his other work to listen to because of his job on this book. If you are considering listening to this, do it! You will definitely not be sorry.

Lots of Wisdom
Revisado: 07-04-15
Any additional comments?
I had read reviews about Kornfield's delivery and was worried because it doesn't take much to annoy me when it comes to the performance of these audio books. At first I did find his delivery slightly grating. As time went on and I got absorbed in the content, however, any annoyance with the delivery went away. I would definitely recommend this book. I will probably listen to it again. For anyone with any interest in Buddhism, this is a very good primer. I can see where it would be helpful to have at least a passing acquaintance with eastern philosophy, but anybody could listen to this and understand it. People who don't consider themselves to be buddhist can listen to this and get a lot out of it without being asked to change your beliefs. Our western minds can definitely use more of this eastern wisdom.
