Historia
Lincoln found the solace and tactics he needed to deal with the nation’s worst crisis in the “coping strategies” he had developed over a lifetime of persevering through depressive episodes and personal tragedies. With empathy and authority gained from his own experience with depression, Shenk crafts a nuanced, revelatory account of Lincoln and his legacy. Based on careful, intrepid research, Lincoln’s Melancholy unveils a wholly new perspective on how our greatest president brought America through its greatest turmoil.

Very interesting
Revisado: 04-30-25
I wasn’t familiar with Lincoln’s biography. I found it very interesting to learn about his mental health issues and how he managed to deal with them. Also very interesting to learn about various historians of different times addressed the topic and why. Very pleasant listening.

The plot has very interesting elements such as a Chatbot that plays a role as an additional character. But the romance aspect is too pronounced for me. I found that the narrator exaggerated it even more. May be native English speakers appreciate her overtly sentimental tone but I find it mannered. People can fall in love without it sounding sugarcoated.

Historia
Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. But then, Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal, and they’ve barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help. Madison’s twin stepkids are moving in with her family, and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there’s a catch: The twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way.

Great novel great narration
Revisado: 04-16-25
If I had to categorize this novel it would belong to magical realism in the style of Murakami and Kawaguchi. The magical element of the children catching fire blends very naturally into the realistic story. The main character, Lillian is a social misfit whose expectations have always been disappointed, who was systematically broken to the point that she’s lost even the ability to dream and to wish anything for herself. Opposite her is her childhood friend Madison, a beautiful, popular, rich kid inhabited by ambitious goals and determined to achieve them, but also kind enough to be Lilian’s friend and protect her. After years of separation they reconnect when Madison reaches out to Lillian for help in taking care of her stepchildren, the twins that catch fire.
What ensues is quite an emotional journey through which Lillian will (a bit magically, of course) find her purpose. The summary doesn’t do justice to this beautifully written and very creative story. The narrator is more than excellent.

Surpasses expectations/Surpasse les attentes
Revisado: 03-21-25
This book is a testimonial of the Rwandan genocide, a horrific civil war event that must be documented for all of us to learn from and not repeat. But it is also a wonderful emotional account what it means to be uprooted, torn between two countries, a very sensitive account of friendships and of complex family relationships. The writing is rich, yet very fluid, Like its main character, its apparent simplicity conceals a deep and generous soul.

The book is part of a series. Events and characters cannot be fully understood without knowledge of the previous books (which I did not have). In addition I was not very receptive to the characters. As the book is highly rated, I assume other listeners find their banter engaging, I did not.

Engrossing in spite of …
Revisado: 02-09-25
To me, many aspects of this thriller were not plausible at all and I did not like the exaggerated pathos of one of the narrators. Yet the writing and the plot captured my attention from the striking opening scene on and I could not put it down.

A few issues prevented me from enjoying this book
Revisado: 02-02-25
It may be only me, but I found that the female voices impersonated by the male narrator made them all sound more stupid than their characters would command. Secondly I was shocked by how Jake Brigance and his wife treated the family they're supposed to be defending, in particular the young girl. Apart from that, its a classic courtroom drama.
