Historia
Football is a game of steps: Quick steps. Trick steps. Even sneaky, slick steps. Whether you're on or off the pitch, you best know your footing. And for Max Best, that's no problem at all. He has the ability to read players to a T—thanks to the sentient stat-tracking display he received after saving an elderly man in the streets. Now, as director of football for Chester FC, everything's falling into place for Max. His team is climbing the ranks. He's executing great transfers and hired a literal old hand for his brand-new women's team. What could go wrong?

Masterful Storytelling
Revisado: 11-16-24
I don't follow football. I'm more knowledgeable about the rules of American football. Despite that, I picked up this series because it was an interesting premise for a LitRPG. Through Ted Steel's writing and Luke Francis's performance, Max Best's football journey is charming, easy to follow, and even easier to be enthralled by. The quick lessons, character dynamics, quick wit, and heartfelt moments create such a romantic vision of football that I couldn't help but fall in love with the sport. Book 4 continues to reinforce my love for the series and doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. I eagerly await the next installment.

Historia
When football fanatic and loveable loser Max Best saved an old codger from a mugging, he never expected to be rewarded with the ability to immediately pinpoint a player's specific skills—and use that knowledge to up his own levels. Ever since that fateful night, Max has devoted himself to the game far more than any mere fan, becoming not only a serious footballer in his own right but a leader both on and off the pitch.

Enchanting and unorthodox story about football
Revisado: 08-22-24
This review is essentially for the entire series so far. Ted Steel's writing invokes emotions and romance towards the game of football. Luke Francis brings it to life with his amazing performance. Max Best enthralls all who he meets with his witty banter, riveting retrospection, and mystically enhanced football savvy. I honestly may have become a fan of the sport because of it.

A slow, haunting, and entrancing march onwards
Revisado: 07-21-24
I was apprehensive towards an arc centered on witches. There are so many characters and storylines introduced so far, I was curious at where the story would go next. To me, that's when pirateaba is at their best. Their ability to introduce and showcase a new, mysterious part of the world that they have crafted is why I've come to love this series. Learning the tragic past about seemingly minor characters and peering through a window of the unknown at everything that exists beyond has been done time and again in this series but every instance has been surprisingly successful in execution. Though I may be a tad biased because of my love for the series. As always, Andrea Parsneau's performance is emotional, engaging, and I eagerly await the next installment.

Historia
When Alice Verianna went to sleep, she was just another teen from the Denver suburbs. She definitely didn't expect to be transported to a magical alternate dimension, inhabited by monsters and presided over by a mysterious System. Here, people resemble RPG characters and everyone has access to their own status screens. Grappling with the mechanics of the elusive System isn't the only challenge Alice faces. It seems an underground organization known as the Society of Starry Eyes has taken a particular interest in other dimensions.

Great concept hampered by tedious writing
Revisado: 04-25-24
The idea of a character trying to understand how magic works is a novel idea to me and was what grabbed my attention. While I enjoyed the book overall, it felt like I had to slog through the inner ramblings of the MC at times (which does make sense but does not necessarily enhance the listening experience).
Minor spoilers below
Pros:
- The concept of a 'scientist' trying to make sense of a fantastical world governed by a video game system
- The experimentation and gradual understanding/revealing of the magic system/inner workings of mana in this world
- Side characters react and think in a realistic way to someone from another world
Cons:
- Felt like I had to 'get through' status updates due to the tedious nature of leveling up and the constant reminders of what perks the MC has but many LitRPGs have this problem, very few handle it gracefully without interrupting the flow of the story.
- Sometimes it feels like the MC repeats the same idea/thought, just worded differently.
- Repeatedly goes 'however' but I imagine it's common when you're attempting understand how things work and considering new possibilities
- One of the characters speak/think very similarly to the MC, but that may just be because they are similar.
- Personal pet peeve: The narrator pronounces temperature as 'tem-peh-ture'

A much more riveting installment
Revisado: 12-26-23
After the 3 book arc of events in Liscor that eventually culminated in the Siege of Liscor, the Windrunner was a break that didn’t really hit the right spot after such a huge climax. The title of the book left me wanting more than what I got. The Titan of Baleros gave me exactly what I’d wanted and more!

A Fast-paced LitRPG Adventure
Revisado: 02-24-23
I personally enjoyed Azarinth Healer very much because it was much faster paced compared to the books I’ve recently listened to.
The author has innovative concepts and worldbuilding but fails to keep me invested in anything else but Ilya. The fast pace was refreshing for me but, as a result, the plot suffered. Interactions and events were fleeting as Ilya moved from place to place, battle to battle, leaving people behind as she traveled. One could argue that it’s more realistic in how fleeting encounters can lead to more of a story if only you choose to take those paths and Ilya’s singleminded goals led to the windows of opportunity passing by in most cases.
Andrea Parsneau delivers another great performance, and was the main reason I decided to get this audiobook! She skillfully portrays Ilya’s confident, easy going, and at times vulnerable, attitude. Her repertoire of voices helps distinguish the many characters that appear in the story and I will always be impressed by her work.
Despite my misgivings, I’ll be looking forward to the next installment!

Historia
The city of Celum is not much like Liscor at all. While Erin is surrounded by familiar, human faces, she’s far from home and without her inn. At the same time, a certain ill-tempered Lyonette is squatting in Erin’s inn, and Goblins are on the move. The Goblin Lord’s threat reaches across the entire region, and the Redfang tribe has rallied against him with the Floodplains tribe, although their Chieftains do not agree on some crucial matters. This winter, there is only snow, Goblins, magic, and iambic pentameter.

The Story Continues
Revisado: 06-23-21
The quality of pirateaba’s writing and Andrea Parsneau’s performance delivers yet again.
As other reviews have stated, the story deviates a bit from the last 2 installments as new characters are introduced and minor characters are explored. While I initially felt annoyed that I had to follow along with unfamiliar and unlikeable characters, they quickly became some of my favorites.
If you are audiobook listeners getting to book 3, all I have to say is to trust in what pirateaba has built so far and you will not be disappointed. I sure as hell wasn’t.
Looking forward to volume 4.

Historia
Every year, the empire administers the rite of passage into adulthood. That rite serves to identify those blessed by Aether to become magi. The new magi are shipped to the academy to learn the arts of magic. The academy is a dangerous place; the tournaments held twice each year can cripple or kill the students, and the clans of the empire will go to great lengths to recruit the students they want. Gregory had one dream: to become a magi like the legends of old. Though he was ridiculed by the residents of the village and his unsupportive father, he never wavered from his dream.

Intriguing but falls flat
Revisado: 10-05-20
An average boy with a dream of becoming a mage gets his wish and is thrust into a world of magic. Sounds like a good place to start, right?
In this story, the main character is special due to his unknown power and heritage and does not hold prejudices that are common in society due to growing up in a 'fringe' village. He's a good person and works very hard.
My initial impression of the world setting seemed to be medieval European but as the MC traveled to more civilized society, it turned out to be Asian, mainly Japanese, culturally.
The story and social aspects of society and the characters involved with the MC are reminiscent of Chinese mentality and Chinese fantasy novels (Wu Xia) where power is everything and you do whatever is necessary to get ahead in life. A very unforgiving way of life.
Moments of adolescent puberty and lustful acts seem like an attempt to make the book more mature than it would be without them.
My opinion of this book is affected by my reading similar kinds of stories over and over again. To put it simply, it was very average. The author attempted to make it unique by blending the things that I listed above, but it followed a very simple plot with little to no character development aside from romantic engagements.
To be succinct, this book wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good either.
Regarding the Narrator, Andrea Parsneau, I've yet to hear her deliver a subpar performance. Her work has been, and continues to be, amazing.

Ending is lacking, narration lost me
Revisado: 01-17-20
The story was pleasant. Definitely took some cues from the movie, Gladiator (2008). I enjoyed it until the ending that I zoned out. This foe that was built up over the course of a few chapters served only as a last road block that ultimately held no consequence. I would have preferred them to have had a larger role in the next book, but I won't be continuing the series due to my qualms with the narration.
After the first 2 books in the series, I enjoyed the fresh concept of a recovering veteran in a fantasy world so I was able to dismiss the narration quality. Due to my losing interest in the final act of the story, I noticed how much I was bothered by the narration. I did not really enjoy the voices used for Yendis and other characters as they were very harsh characterizations (which is actually fine when it comes to antagonists). There were also several mispronunciations as a result of the narrator's accent but it just bothers me too much. It comes down to personal preference so if any prospective listeners read this, the story itself is definitely worth listening to.

"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

Just like the characters, you find yourself...
Revisado: 10-28-19
... drawn into another world!
I've listened to and read my fair share of litRPG/isekai and The Wandering Inn places very high, if not topping my list of favorites! The characters' reactions to suddenly finding themselves in another world are very believable and the way they adjust to their new life is intriguing.
The Wandering Inn is unorthodox and doesn't fall into the typical stat and skill monologues that plague this genre that is ever growing, and possibly over crowding. The moments when the writing gets tense and emotional hit me hard and I found myself listening to these critical plot points over and over again. I'm extremely excited for volume 2!
