There is a reason many consider this to be Clarke's Magnum Opus. The themes explored will stay with you for a lifetime.

"Grow some wheat. So you can have a steady supply of bread and be able to barter with the surplus" - Great advice.

Then it tells you to consider getting a cow for a steady supply of milk and cream.

There is absolutely nothing of value here. It's just a copy and pasted collection of common sense lists and advice that mostly doesn't pertain to an urban environment SHTF situation.

Don't waste your time and money on this garbage.

Jack writes about the survival aspects of a SHTF event well and describes how society slowly, then quickly dissolves effectively. Writing this stuff is his strong suit and he should write more in this direction. Unfortunately we spend most of the book on cringeworthy interpersonal relationships that read like the work of a high school essay.

People just don't talk like that and the author has an especially tenuous grasp on the voice of the female lead. She is all female cliches in her speech.

As an example of the amateur style: In the first two chapters we are introduced to Erica, Erica's mother, Erica's ex-fiancee, Tyler, Tyler's uncle Lou, Chad, Trish, Rachel, Kelly & Briana. Got all that? Well it doesn't really matter because only Tyler, Erica & Lou are relevant to the plot.

Some crazy how, in this world, guests at a Ritz-Carlton (ish) hotel get so out of control in only a few hours without power that they literally storm the hotel owner's private apartment in the building demanding a refund. The book is littered with unrealistic reactions like this, which is unfortunate because the large scale story is good. The author is good at describing how society at large would react and respond to a SHTF situation. He just gets out of his depth quickly when he zooms in to the personal stories and how individuals would react to given situations.

If you're looking for a good tale of SHTF survival, it isn't here. Look somewhere else.

Puts a laser pointer on the elephant in the room.

Brilliantly written and expertly read. It puts into plain detail the elephant in the room. It's Eurocentric because that's where the worst of the problems are happening, but it's a global problem.

My wife and I abandoned our plans to move to France after an extensive trip to look at housing in the suburbs around Paris lead us to the conclusion that France was somehow evaporating. It had changed so vastly in the last decade and was almost unrecognisable from the France we both fell in love with in our youth.

Almost 100% of the Africans riding the metro either jumped the gates or squeezed through the gates in behind the fare paying locals. Huge areas of the city were dominated by Africans and Muslims. It just wasn't Paris anymore.

This book clearly outlines the mechanisms for this 'great replacement'. Equal parts fascinating and terrifying. It's a must read/listen.

The story is great, told from many different angles and jumping around in time, to let the reader into a well imagined post civil war world.

Where this production really shines though is from Dion Graham's reading. I would say this is the best read novel I've ever heard. He is truly a joy to listen to.

Sounded like an interesting topic but badly written and very repetitive. The author doesn't offer the insight I was hoping for. It's just a collection of dry facts.
