Historia
Between 1793 and 1794, thousands of French citizens were imprisoned and hundreds sent to the guillotine by a powerful dictatorship that claimed to be acting in the public interest. Only a few years earlier, revolutionaries had proclaimed a new era of tolerance, equal justice, and human rights. How and why did the French Revolution's lofty ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity descend into violence and terror?

smart, well documented and very interesting
Revisado: 01-26-23
The psychology and the causes of the descent into terror are very well presented.
Although I had been warned( by the title itself), I was a bit dissapointed that the events of year II (the apogee of terror)were almost not discussed, as the book mainly focuses on the events that preceded the terror( and how they created it), and not on the terror itself.

Historia
This deeply researched book describes one of the great forgotten battles of the 20th century. At its height it involved nearly a million Chinese and Japanese soldiers, while sucking in three million civilians as unwilling spectators and, often, victims. It turned what had been a Japanese adventure in China into a general war between the two oldest and proudest civilizations of the Far East. Ultimately, it led to Pearl Harbor and to seven decades of tumultuous history in Asia. The Battle of Shanghai was a pivotal event that helped define and shape the modern world.

I was pleasantly surprised.

I was pleasantly surprised by the degree of knowledge of a well balanced account.
Thought his sympathy goes with China, the author does not hide the cruelty , incompetence and disregard for human life of the Chinese side.

Historia
By understanding the dramatic story of the Ottoman Empire - from its early years as a collection of raiders and conquerors to its undeniable power in the 15th and 16th centuries to its catastrophic collapse in the wreckage of the First World War - one can better grasp the current complexities of the Middle East. Befitting a story of such epic scope and grandeur, every lecture is a treasure trove of historical insights into the people, events, themes, and locales responsible for shaping the story of this often-overlooked empire.

scandalously subjective and apologetic
Revisado: 04-04-22
While I usually appreciate Harl, his comments on the Armenian Genocide and the very long series of Turkish atrocities is absolute crap, there are no other way to describe it otherwise.
The facts are carefully manipulated and rationalized, the worse depiction of event I can remember is the siege of Van. In this rare and specific case, the Armenians did massacred a number of Turkish civilians, he tells this as if it was the rule and both sides committed an equal share of crimes. He also forgot to mention that the (atrocious) Armenians reprisals happened after their near extinction in the same area a few months before.
Somehow he turns Abdul Hamid, the corrupt, oppressive, murderous sultan into a model ruler, this time again not a word on his almost unprovoked and unresponded massacre of hundred of thousands of Armenian.
Btw, I'm not Armenian nor anti Muslim in any way, but the distortion of history here is absolutely abhorrent.
The book looks more like an official account of the Turkish government , not an objective study of the past.

Historia
Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood-and the United States was truly born.

excellent

magnificent book, I was extremely enthusiastic through the reading even if I had difficulties following the military campaigns, mostly because of my poor knowledge of the American geography.

Historia
One of the last major stories on the Third Reich that remains largely untold is that of the extraordinary wave of suicides, carried out not just by much of the Nazi leadership, but by thousands of ordinary Germans, in the Second World War's closing period. Some of these were provoked by terror in the face of advancing Soviet troops or by personal guilt, but many could not be explained in such relatively straightforward terms.

Weird book
Revisado: 12-31-19
Most of the book has little or anything to do with the declared subject. The author find himself speaking about Bruning plan of austerity, the guilt or lack of guilt of the germans after the war and the adventures-from the great crisis of 1929 up to the downfall -of people who didnt commit suicide nor attempted it. The parts that actually speak about the subject are more like individual stories, instead of the academic analysis I was expecting. The book is moderately interesting, but wont give you much information.
