Historia
The Christmas season offers little cheer for Eileen Dunlop, an unassuming yet disturbed young woman trapped between her role as her alcoholic father's caretaker in a home whose squalor is the talk of the neighborhood and a day job as a secretary at the boys' prison, filled with its own quotidian horrors. Consumed by resentment and self-loathing, Eileen tempers her dreary days with perverse fantasies and dreams of escaping to the big city.

finished it quickly so...I liked it a lot
Revisado: 12-16-23
Narrator is terrific.
Whoa daddy. Not the warmest story on the shelf. The writing style is...hmmmm...raw but in a subtle, factual way. Characters range from nicely presented stereotypes to strangely complex and evolving...is she circling the drain or wising up and finding an unsuspected self who knows what to and bloody gets on with it...inspiring to me but in a sorta wide eye even grossed out way. Will be pondering this one.

Historia
This is the story of James Leininger, who---a little more than two weeks after his second birthday---began having blood-curdling nightmares that just would not stop. When James began screaming out recurring phrases like "Plane on fire! Little man can't get out!" the Leiningers finally admitted that they truly had to take notice.

fascinating tale; left on the fence
Revisado: 10-20-21
I'm not sure what to think about this. Narrator is good. Subject is fascinating. Writing is good...but I am left with something of a sense of having taken a very long trip down the garden path. If true, this is a compelling call for rethinking much. If untrue, it is likely an equally amazing feat of self-deception. I do not think it is a con. But I suppose it could be. My gut tells me this is likely a case of a very intelligent young boy who gathers clues like a giant antenna and assembles complex responses that please the parents. But again, I just don't know. Worth the hearing in either case.

How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Historia
The fate of the Lost Ark of the Covenant is one of the great historical mysteries of all time. The Bible contains hundreds of references to the Ark's power, but the Ark itself mysteriously disappears from recorded history sometime after the building of the Temple of Solomon. After 10 years of searching through the dusty archives of Europe and the Middle East, Graham Hancock has succeeded where scores of others have failed. This intrepid journalist has tracked down the true story behind the myths and legends - revealing where the Ark is today, how it got there, and why it remains hidden.

being Graham Hancock
Revisado: 09-15-21
I am a fan of Graham Hancock. I have not read all his books, but I have read several. I like books that provoke me to think new thoughts, see things a different way....many of Hancock's books do this nicely. But this one. It seemed to me to be a long, long trek to nowhere sure. The author's lively mind and energy are evident throughout, but I think he accepts his own mind's journey, meticulous and thorough as it may be, to suffice for evidence...but we ended where we began...the ark is probably hidden and stored in Ethiopia. He's convinced because he pursued every possible lead and blind alley and is left with only this conclusion. But it is not conclusive and, in my humble opinion, not persuasive.

Historia
Based on exclusive and unrestricted access to more than 5,000 pages of personal writings and family photos, this definitive biography of German physician and SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Josef Mengele (1911-1979) probes the personality and motivations of Auschwitz's "Angel of Death". From May 1943 through January 1945, Mengele selected who would be gassed immediately, who would be worked to death, and who would serve as involuntary guinea pigs for his spurious and ghastly human experiments (twins were Mengele's particular obsession).

Amazing. Hard hitting. Very well written. Credible, moving and understated. Unimaginable suffering by good men who did not know how tough and heroic they were. To be a tiny cog in that monstrous machine didn't leave many good choices.

This Is Where We Live tells the story of Claudia and Jeremy, a young married couple (she’s an aspiring filmmaker, he’s an indie musician) who are on the verge of making it. Her first film was a sensation at Sundance and is about to have its theatrical release; he’s assembled a new band and is a few songs shy of an album. But a series of seismic events deal a crushing blow to their dreams.

like the novel; like the author
Revisado: 09-11-20
This is not what I usually read (hear). Read Pretty Things, liked it, then this one...like it more. Author's voice is credible to me and never pretentious. I like books that give me a look at places I've never been and will never see...sorts of people far from my orbit. This novel was engrossing and touching. Lots of insights into flawed humans and our blundering dealings with the world and with one another. The writing is intelligent and raw without cynicism.

a good tale by a skilled writer
Revisado: 09-05-20
This is not my typical read (listen). I chose it for a change of fare and because of the glowing reviews. I think this is a very good writer and the narration is equal to it. Kept my attention and I finished it quickly. Many insights in human foibles and human nature. I do like flawed heroes. The novel is set at Lake Tahoe and is technically good, but not perfect...this is why four stars and not five. For example, the astonishing depth of the lake is made quite clear, but well into the story a boater drops anchor in the middle...hmmmm. A few like that. But I will look for other work by this author. I like her voice and her honest take on our flawed species.

Revisado: 08-11-20
This is a good story, skillfully written and not the usual fare. I think the author succeeds in her objective, stated in afterword, of visiting a neglected American chapter. I loved the characters and the author's insights into flawed but real personalities. The narrators...wow...so very good.
