The narrator spoke like he had a marble in his mouth. His attempt at a mimicking a southern drawl only made it sound like he had three marbles in his mouth. He spoke in the same tone for every character and the same pace for every scene. The story itself was generic, predictable, and poorly researched. First of all, Ms Brown seemed to project a wildly inaccurate bad-boy fantasy onto pilots. Sure, the military pilots can can be crass, crude, and cocky. However, when compared to men in other professions, pilots tend to be straight-laced, buttoned-up nerds with a distinct lack of personal issues and an abundance of caution with the law. That's a big part of the reason flying is by far the safest way to travel. Some technical details were present but clearly not actually understood by the person who put them there. The main character seems to be revered by the pilot community for things that would not impress a real pilot. If you know anything about the real flying world, the main character's backstory will destroy your immersion.

Anyways, the man in the story is a painfully typical, aloof bad boy with a "traumatizing" past who eventually spills his guts in a teary-eyed confession, and the woman is the annoyingly flawless, genius, super-model doctor that can cure cancer. Oh, and some corrupt senator is after them I guess. It's like Ms Brown tried to make Jack Reacher into a pilot, but forgot to bring along Reacher's confidence, intelligence, wit, creativity, and convictions. So, everything that people actually like about Reacher. Also, a somewhat believable romantic companion would have been a nice touch.

As usual, the book is better than the movie.

I'm glad the movie was made because it introduced me to the books. I started with Tripwire and now what feels like a dozen books later I finally finished the book that inspired the movie. And the best part is that even though I've seen the movie, it didn't necessarily spoil the book.

A brilliant and exciting conclusion to an epic trilogy, and a cinematic production that will inspire the wonder and awe that the original Star Wars films used to captivate a generation.

This is the first Jack Reacher novel I read, and it's got me hooked for the rest of the series.
