I couldn’t stop listening…
Revisado: 01-05-25
This book was fast paced, which kept me listening! I l loved the main characters and their development throughout the narrative. I also loved the plot twists that kept me guessing.

Historia
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Very dark but I could not stop listening
Revisado: 02-23-22
First, the narrator was perfect for this narrative. The story is incredibly dark, sad and disheartening but I could not stop listening. I had to know what would happen next. While I do not understand how this woman was able to manipulate everyone around her, i recognize that people like this do exist. I felt so sorry for the children and anyone else this woman was able to manipulate and control. The story nonetheless was very well written, and the delivery was A1. I hope some of the proceeds from the book go to the Knotek sisters for being incredibly brave and telling this story.

Historia
Told in two distinct and irresistible voices, Junauda Petrus' bold and lyrical debut is the story of two black girls from very different backgrounds finding love and happiness in a world that seems determined to deny them both. Junauda Petrus' debut brilliantly captures the distinctly lush and lyrical voices of Mabel and Audre as they conjure a love that is stronger than hatred, prison, and death and as vast as the blackness between the stars.

A beautiful narrative
Revisado: 04-17-21
I found the characters to be so endearing that I didn’t want the story to end. All of the discussion about healing, ancestry, love and acceptance. There were even some unexpected twists and turns that I found to be very refreshing. I would definitely recommend this book and I will be rereading it for sure.

Great Narrator, Terrible Narrative
Revisado: 03-09-21
I really wanted to like this book, but the story is all over the place. I can respect the fact that Souljah wanted to do something different and if the storyline began on this trajectory it would have been easier to go along with the narrative, but this book is a far cry from the Coldest Winter Ever. I agree with another reviewer who said that this book falls somewhere between Lovecraft Country and Dante’s Inferno, and not in a good way. I had to return it, which I rarely do, but I just couldn’t continue listening. As someone who loved the original book, I am very disappointed. I think Nia Long did good as the narrator but the overall story just fell flat for me.

Historia
In Purple Hibiscus, she recounts the story of a young Nigerian girl searching for freedom. Although her father is greatly respected within their community, 15-year-old Kambili knows a frighteningly strict and abusive side to this man. In many ways, she and her family lead a privileged life, but Kambili and her brother, Jaja, are often punished for failing to meet their father’s expectations. After visiting her aunt and cousins, Kambili dreams of being part of a loving family.

An incredible story...
Revisado: 05-18-15
The most memorable moment for me in this narrative is when Kambili finally finds her voice. Many unfortunate things happened to both the protagonist and her brother, Jaja, but the story is told in such a matter of fact way. These characters were not seeking sympathy although they deserved much. These children are fighting to gain the respect of their generous but tyrannical father who is incredibly abusive towards Kambili and Jaja. This narrative was so incredibly tragic but so beautifully
written...Adiche has quickly become one of my favorite writers...

Not worth the hype...
Revisado: 08-30-14
Any additional comments?
This book starts off EXTREMELY slow!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't get remotely interesting until about chapter 70. I don't really see what all of the hype is about, honestly. I just couldn't really connect with the characters. Lincoln is a nice guy, but I couldn't connect with him. The email conversations between Beth and Jennifer were interesting, very nice dialogue. Outside of that, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

Historia
Fresh from a four-month stint in rehab for her "alleged" shopping addiction, Babe Walker returns home to Bel Air 10 pounds lighter (thanks to a stomach virus), having made amends (she told a counselor with bad skin she was smart) and confronted her past (after meeting her birth mother for the first time - a fashion model turned farmer lesbian). Although delighted to be home and determined to maintain her hard-won inner peace, Babe now faces a host of outside forces seemingly intent on derailing her path to positive change.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Revisado: 10-20-12
Would you listen to Parable of the Talents again? Why?
I would definitely listen to Parable of the Talents again because it is such an amazing story about perseverance. Laure Olamina is an awesome young woman who is determined to survive in this post-apocalyptic time. And while her religion is not one I would choose, I understand why the Acorn community lives according
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There is a moment in Parable of the Talents when the protagonist and her community are enslaved by a fanatical Christian group and it is such a defeating and hopeless moment. However, things do turn around for the Acorn community...

Amazing Book/Audiobook
Revisado: 11-10-11
A co-worker recommended this book to me and I was hooked from the beginning. The bond between friends is near and dear to my heart, as I know what it is like to have an unconditional friendship (BFF). The narrator was awesome in her delivery and the storyline, though a little long winded, was well thought out and somewhat suspenseful. I would def listen to it again!
