Historia
Don Miller was quiet and reserved. As a former youth pastor, he seemed a devout Christian. No one would have ever suspected that the recent graduate of the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice was a serial killer. However, when Miller was arrested for the attempted murder of two teenagers in 1978, police quickly realized he was probably responsible for the disappearances of four women. Offered a still-controversial plea bargain, he led police to the bodies of the missing women. Now, after 40 years in prison, Miller has served his time.

Tedious Court Play by Play
Revisado: 04-12-22
I appreciate the work that went into chronicling Miller's story, but I personally found the exhaustive account of Miller's court cases to be too much. This is really more of a play by play court procedural than anything else. very dry, not particularly deep, but a solid effort.

Historia
David Wojnarowicz's brief but eventful life was not easy. From a suburban adolescence marked by neglect, drugs, prostitution, and abuse to a squalid life on the streets of New York City, to fame - and infamy - as an activist and controversial visual artist whose work was lambasted in the halls of Congress, all before his early death from AIDS at age thirty-seven, Wojnarowicz seemed to be at war with a homophobic "establishment" and the world itself. Yet what emerged from the darkness was a truly extraordinary artist and human being.

Historia
On a tour through history that's both whimsical and startling, we'll encounter 17th-century children flying around inside their New England home "like geese". We'll meet a father-son team of pious Puritans who embarked on a mission that involved undressing ladies and overseeing hangings. And on the eve of the Civil War, we'll accompany a reporter as he dons a dress and goes searching for witches in New York City's most dangerous neighborhoods.

Decent Book, Tough Narrator
Revisado: 02-25-22
The book is a fairly interesting and general overview of the Salem Witch Trials, but is little more. I personally found the narrator annoying, which I found distracting, but that's just me.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

Great Story, Rough Narration
Revisado: 02-03-22
The story is an excellent mix of folk horror with modern problems and an underlying supernatural threat that holds it all down. What made it suffer for me was the narrator. He has a carnival barker nasal voice that is hard to focus on. His voicings of women and children are inexcusably cartoonish and insultingly condescending. You might be better served to read this one.

Great book, difficult narrator
Revisado: 01-21-22
I love Wallander. All the books, most of the film and TV adaptations. This book is particularly excellent as it's from his daughter Linda's pov. The issue I have with the narrator is that whenever she voices Kurt she sounds cartoonishly pissed off. Yes, Kurt is a difficult man, but he's also three dimensional. I felt the narrator had a personal problem with him, which I couldn't care less about. Still a worthy listen.

Mitch Horowitz presents a meticulously researched, compulsively listenable history of the mystical and spiritual experience in our country. Focusing on the impact that the 19-century movements of Freemasonry, Spiritualism, and transcendentalism have had on America, Horowitz portrays a colorful cast of characters as he explains the origins of the Ouija board, the political influence of Spiritualism on the Senate, and the source of the mysterious slogan on the back of the dollar bill.

I would have preferred much more depth on the subject, and a wider window of coverage, time-wise, but overall it is an interesting and informative listen. the narrator is solid and reliable.

Historia
Composed almost entirely of letters written by Werther to his friend Wilhelm, The Sorrows of Young Werther is a heartbreaking narrative about a doomed love. Werther, a young artist driven more by the heart than by reason, is already enraptured with the elusive Charlotte when she marries another man better suited to her class. To keep Charlotte near, Werther befriends her husband - a bid that becomes a torturous reminder of all he's lost.

insufferable
Revisado: 11-11-21
An insufferable peek into the mind of an arrogant, entitled ass. Werther is an unbearable and pompous creep who attached himself, unwanted, to the object of his affection without a care in the world for her, her husband, or those around her. On top of this, the narrator makes Werther sound even more annoying than he already is on the page. Right or if the chute, sturm und drang is off to a very tedious start.

New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

Buehlman has hit it out of the park with this engaging, funny, and credible take on a late 70s NYC vampire and his weird clan as they face a deadly "new" foe. His narration is brilliant as well. Highly recommended.
