Historia
Growing up, Travis Uriah Long yearned for order and discipline in his life...he two things his neglectful mother couldn’t or wouldn’t provide. So when Travis enlisted in the Royal Manticoran Navy, he thought he’d finally found the structure he’d always wanted so desperately. But life in the RMN isn’t exactly what he expected. Boot camp is rough and frustrating; his first ship assignment lax and disorderly; and with the Star Kingdom of Manticore still recovering from a devastating plague, the Navy is possibly on the edge of budgetary extinction.

Not David Webber's Writing Style
Revisado: 12-03-14
The book clearly takes place in the Honorverse, well before the birth of Honor Harrington. But the writing style was a sharp departure from what I remember enjoying about the Honor Harrington series. Characters lacked dimension. I'll be giving future books in this particular series a pass.

Historia
When the supergiant star Antares exploded in 2512, the human colony on Alta found their pathway to the stars gone, isolating them from the rest of human space for more than a century. Then one day, a powerful warship materialized in the system without warning. Alarmed by the sudden appearance of such behemoth, the commanders of the Altan Space Navy dispatched one of their most powerful ships to investigate. What ASNS Discovery finds when they finally catch the intruder is a battered hulk manned by a dead crew. That is disturbing news for the Altans....

Basically a good science fiction story, well told.
Revisado: 02-24-13
Michael McCollum's Antares Dawn and the next book, Antares Passage, must be read together for a satisfying story arc. Sufficiently engaging characters.

Uncomplicated Story, Yet So Hard to Follow
Revisado: 02-22-13
The story here is simple on the face of it, but I found the story oddly difficult to follow. I never found myself invested in the story or characters.

Potential was there but didn't really take off.
Revisado: 02-22-13
I bought this book because I enjoyed one of the author's other books, Gibraltar Earth. This book, as a series, has potential but this particular book didn't really grab my interest until the last several chapters, and then only passingly. As for the performance, I got used to the slightly-off pronunciation of certain words after a time but it was oddly distracting at first.

Dull; Not Nearly As Good As Joe Haldeman's Others
Revisado: 02-09-13
The story concept is potentially engaging but it's all about dull internal politics leading up to its anticlimactic ending. I've read Joe Haldeman's other books, which I enjoyed much more.

Similar to Lucifer's Hammer in mood but nowhere near as good. Some characters drawn out leaving others undeveloped. No sense of horror or destruction. Dull in places.
