Historia
Brought up amid the luxury of plantation life, Marianne Johnston never questions her sheltered life until, driven by her conscience, she joins the Underground Railroad. Soon Marianne is living a dangerous double life, helping slaves flee by night and acting the belle by day. And nothing is riskier than her attraction to wild, heartless young Southerner Yves Chamard - while being courted by his noble older brother.

Glad I hung in there...
Revisado: 01-14-21
The first book in this series was so good that I couldn't wait to get to the second one. However, at first I thought that I was going to be disappointed. The story started out a little slow and I was confused as to who was who amongst the characters. I think that a lot of it had to do with the fact that there was about a 20-year gap between the first book and this one. I literally had to sit down and get the characters' names and relationships straight. After that, it didn't take long before the story got really good and had me listening every chance I got to see what was going to happen next. I can't wait to listen to the next book in this series.

Historia
It's 1894. Jordan Wallace and Sadie Wagner appear to have little in common. Jordan, a middle-aged black teacher, lives in segregated Chicago. Two thousand miles away, Sadie, the white wife of an ambitious German businessman, lives in more tolerant Oakland, California. But years ago, their families intertwined on a plantation in Virginia. There, Jordan's and Sadie's mothers developed a bond stronger than blood, despite the fact that one was enslaved and the other was the privileged daughter of the plantation’s owner.

Fingers crossed this series continues
Revisado: 06-19-20
All three of the books in this series have been outstanding. This continuing story sheds light upon the dark past of this country. However, the characters, especially Elizabeth, give hope that all people will eventually be treated equally regardless of their race.
The narration by Bahni Turpin is excellent in all three books. I highly recommend this book along with the other two books in this series.

Historia
In this compulsively listenable tale of secrets, lies, and deception, Gilly Macmillan explores the darkest impulses and desires of the human heart. Diabolically clever, The Nanny reminds us that sometimes the truth hurts so much you’d rather hear the lie.

Almost gave up an hour in, but glad that I didn't
Revisado: 06-10-20
The first hour was slow for me and I almost stopped listening. However, once I got into the meat of the story, I enjoyed it very much. I thought that the narration of Virginia and Hannah were exceptionally good. I could picture them in my head every time they spoke. The narration of Joe and the detective were okay. I had some ideas about how the story would end from about the middle of the book, but there were some twists that had me rethinking my guesses. I would recommend this book.

Another character you will feel like you've known forever. Kinsella is a master at making the reader feel like a part of her stories.

In the running as one of my favorite books of all
Revisado: 02-22-19
Phillips pulled me into the story within the first couple of pages. When I first started the book, my plan was to listen to it as I walked my dog (motivation to get out there and do it), but that quickly changed. by chapter 5, I was listening to it on my 10 minute commute to and from work as well as any couple of minutes that I could managed to get to myself. I found myself wanting to listen non-stop but at the same time dreading getting to the end. The main character, Tangie May, is a character that you can't help but root for, cry for and dream for. This book will touch your soul and remind you of all that you have to be thankful for. hopefully, I won't have to wait very long for the sequel... I have a feeling that I'm going to be having Tangie Mae withdrawals before too long.
